Pu Vnitrrl Press MOSCOW, May 12.—Weeks of intensive inquiry by officials of the commissariat of education h* vej failed to reveal any trace of the ! ■world-famous painting, “September' Morn,” being sought by its painter.! Paul Chabas. The fame of the painting did not penetrate very deeply in Russia, as ; museum authorities approached on) the subject had never seen or heard > of it. Further, research, however, disclosed art experts acquainted with the famous Mantacheff collection! vho remembered the work. The collection was dispersed after the revolution, the paintings considered of especial artistic value going into museums. "September Morn" obviously was hot rated high by experts at the t ime and did not get into a museum. j For the present all trace of it here ; is lost. Officials professed their surprise I that the painting should be so highly j valued abroad, but saw the possi- j bility of reselling it outside Russia ! if it were found.

Bitter War Rages Over Giant Painting

flw r niteri Press YORK. May 12.—Workmcn today prepared to hang a permanent covering of canvas over Diego Rivera's gigantic mural painting in the RCA building of Rockefeller Center. The Mexican artist's fresco, including a portrait of Lenin, dead Soviet leader, will not be removed, but will be hidden from the public gaze. The Rockefeller family, financial .sponsors of the painting, have forbidden Rivera to complete it. An excited workman, -who had gone to the building to remove tools and materials belonging to Rivera, brought word to the artist that workmen were boring holes through the iresco every two feet. A United Press representative who visited the building was told by a superintendent in charge of workmen that “a few holes have been bored to hold up the permanent canvas covering.” The reporter was forbidden to make a close examination of the mural, which was almost entirely concealed by a temporary covering of tar paper and boards and scaffolding.
