HORSES BRING GOOD PRICES IN RISING MARKET Scarce in County, But Demand Is Expected to Continue. BV SHELDON KEY C. K. Murphy, assistant county agricultural agent, has found a business that is “booming ' ana secs no depression in it for at least eight years. “There are big profits in horse trading." said Murphy, as he sat at his desk at the courthouse advising a farmer, who wanted to buy a good team. “There is the biggest market for horses today than any time in the last six years,” declared Murphy, “hut horses are scarce on the Marion county market. “I know 2,500 farmers who are wishing they had a good team of brood mares but can't find it.” Murphy has been occupied the last .six months helping farmers buy horses. “The ideal horse for the farmer is a three-quarter farm chunk, a stocky, well-coupled horse weighing \ • Mother’s*' >lr, I hern lovely of fragrant. flower*. from 1,350 to 1,450 pounds—heavy enough for plowing and yet light enough to drive to town.” Murphyadvised his farmer-friend. Indiana horse buyers are combing the middle west for good horses of this type and carloads of western horses, many of them unbroke, are being shipped into Indianapolis, Murphy said. Some farmers are buying horses that are pavement-sore but useful on soft ground in the country. “Just to show you how hard good horses are to find,” Murphy asserted. “we looked at a thousand horses to find one good brood mare and then paid $265 for her.” Many farmers have discarded tractors and are buying horses. This is the busy season for the horse marts. “I find,” Murphv said, “farmers wha had old tractors a few years back can't afford to buy new ones. A farmer can pick up a goed team for $250 to $350, work them a couple of years and sell at a profit. “Moreover, four years ago a. good cow would sell for the price of two horses, but now a good horse will buy half a dozen cows.” Murphy estimates the Marion county horse market cannot be replenished in less than eight years. With only 3,873 horses reported for the county in the 1930 census, most of these are past 10 years of age and beyond their usefulness,” Murphy declared. "Yes, sir, I wish I had a bunch
