WIDOW BOUND. ROBBED; TWO ‘FRIENDS' HELD Accuses Pair of Invading Apartment, Fleeing With $7,000 in Loot. A man and woman described as friends by Mrs. EfTie Bull, 1540 North Meridian street, Apartment 3, are held today on charges of robbing her Monday afternoon alter binding her in the apartment. She estimated value of the loot, a brooch, ring and fur coat, at $7,000, but police declare the value is SBOO to SI,OOO. Those held in the case are John Cochran, 25, of the Meridian street address, charged with \agrancy and drunkenness, and Mrs. Emily Watkins, n 7, of 1129 North Alabama street, charged with robbery, larceny and vagrancy. Cochran w’as arrested by police early today after he tried to thumb a ride in a police car in the 6700 block, East Washington street. The brooch with the ring fastened into it was found on the inside of Cochran’s coat lapel, officers said. In a statement to police, Mrs. Bull, widow ol Dr. John H. Bull, said Cochran came to the apartment about 1:30 Monday afternoon and asked for money. She gave him a check for $lO, which police say was recovered with the jewelry. Joined by Woman, Is Charge Shortly after Cochran used a telephone, Mrs. Bull said Mrs. Watkins, estranged wife of John F. Watkins, an attorney, came to the apartment. Cochran continued his pleas for money, but after repeated refusals declared: “In that case. I’ll take it.” Mrs. Bull said she was bound with picture wire, paper was stuffed in her mouth and a towel tied around her face. Cochran had some adhesive tape delivered from a drug store on his phone order with which he completed the binding, she told police. Arresied at Home Mrs. Bull's plight was discovered two hours later by persons wTio called the apartment custodian who released her. Mrs. Watkins was taken into custody at her home, and Harold Sollee, 41, of 1230 North Alabama street, said to have been her guest, is being held as a witness. Patrolmen Melvin Wilkerson and Charles Clemens were cruising in a police car about 4 this morning in the 6700 block East Washington street when Cochran thumbed for a ride. The officers seized Cochran and said they found the ring, brooch and $lO check. The fur coat reported missing has not been recovered. Member of Old Family According to the officers, who had not been notified of the robbery of Mrs. Bull, various stories were told by Cochran regarding the jewelry. He first said it was the property of an aunt, and later that his mother owned it. The brooch, set with a large emerald and ten small diamonds, has a value of $3,500 according to Mrs. Bull; the ring, made of platinum and set with diamonds, $3,000, and the coat, made of seal skin, SSOO. Mrs. Bull, member of an. old Indianapolis family, w'as “Miss Indiana” during a celebration W’hen General Foch, commander of the allied armies, visited Indianapolis after the World war.
