LAW TO CONTROL INDUSTRY URGED BY MISS PERKINS Mrs. Roosevelt and Mrs. MacDonald Attend House Hearing. It <t I m t,,l fnn WASHINGTON, April 25—The senate hanking committee today ordered a favorable report on the 5500.000.000 W’agner-Lewis unemployment relief bill in substantially the form passed by the house. WASHINGTON, April 25.—Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins todayurged upon the house labor committee the administration s unprecedented program for federal control of industry. In the presence of Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Miss Ishbel Mac Do- ] eld and a large crowd in the house caucus room, Miss Perkins testified in a determined manner at opening of hearings on a measure to give the! rational government authority to! fix wages, hours of work and quantity of production. Glaring kleig lights beat down on the slender Madame Secretary. The woman cabinet officer blinked into the light as she sain the real purpose of the bill under consideration was "to increase employment." “Purchasing power has declined to a tremendous extent,’’ Miss Perkins continued, “as well as employ-, ment and pay rolls. "The bill as now drawn,” the sec-! retary said, “virtually is self enforc- j ing.” She denied the measure would ! result in setting up a huge overhead machinery for enforcement.
