CHEAP SHOALS POWER PLAN IS STUDIED HERE City Officials Considering Possibility of Savings Under Project. Possibility of obtaining cheap electrical current from Muscle Shoals, which is to be government operated under a plan proposed today by President Franklin D. Roosevelt was being studied by Indianapo-. lis city officials. The city's ten-year contract with the Indianapolis Power and Light Company for street and public building lighting will expire April 1, 1935. The President's message to congress calls for development of the Muscle Shoals project and producting of current at a cost of 1.36 cents a kilowatt hour, with government construction of electric transmission lines to make this cheap power available. Big Savings Fossiblc Preference is to be given to states, bounties and municipalities. City officials here pointed out that |sower from the Shoals provided at anywhere near cost would save the feity thousands of dollars each year tm its present electric current costs Os nearly $500,000. “The matter deserves verv careful consideration,” Edward H. Knight, city corporation counsel said, when apprised of the plan. “There are many things to be considered and solved, including a distribution system, before service from such a source would tie practical. Until more facts are known and the matter has been studied carefully, nothing definite can be said.” No Comment by Sullivan Practically all street lamps and their wiring is owned by the Indidianapolis Power and Light Company, but might be acquired by purchase at expiration of the contract In 1935. Mayor Reginald H. Sullivan was reticent about discussing possibilities of the city benefiting from the President's plan. "I don't know enough about it yet,” he said, “and I don't see how I can comment on something I don't know anything about.”
