BEER NOT TO BE SERVED BY WOMEN CLUBS More Hope Quenching of Thirst Offered Society Golfers. BY BASIL GALLAGHER Timn Staff Writer Beer and .skittles will not be substituted generally for pink tea and the softer beverages by Indianapolic club women when brew becomes legal after April 7. A survey of the bridge and social clubs in town disclosed that a foaming glass of PiLsencr or Schlitz has no appeal for women who gather to play contract or discuss social problems. A single exception to the general feminine tendency to frown upon serving beer in clubs was the sentiment expressed at the Knickerbocker Bridge Club, where Mrs. A. R. Coffin, hostess, said: “We’re not dry here. That's one thing sure. We will not serve beer in the club because the cost of the license will be too high. Individual members may bring their own beer if they wish and keep it here.'’ Sentiment Is Shown The wet or dry sentiments of some of the other clubs are: Mrs. R. O. McAlexander, Woman's Department Club: "We will not serve beer. We have too many members who still cling to the dry tradition." Mrs. W. H. Hodgson, Municipal Gardens Club: “No beer served here. There is a general prejudice against it among the sixty members." Propylaeum Club: “No beer will be served. No desire for it among the 500 members. The alcoholic traditions of hardriding horsemen apparently -will not be upheld at the Arlington Riding Club, where it was said today that beer probably would not be served at, the club house. At the country clubs prospects looked brighter for the disciples of Sir John FalstafT. Country Club to Serve The Indianapolis Country Club not only will serve beer, but will welcome its return with a rousing reception planned tentatively for April 8. The Avalon Country Club has applied for a license, and will start dispensing as soon as possible. This also is the situation at the Highland Golf Club. At the Meridian Hills Country Club, A. P. Hitz said: “Our club is known all over the country as a dry club. Not enough interest in the beer question has been shown to even warrant a meeting to decide the question.” The Broadmoor and the Woodstock Clubs are still in the throes of debate on the burning question and will announce their policies later. DUPED PROSECUTOR MEETSJPAL’ IN COURT ‘You Kan Up sl2 Phone Bill On Me’ —‘That's Right.’ Says Man. "I remember you." Jacob Steinmetz, deputy prosecutor said to Arthur Rice, Negro, 833 Camp street, when Rice appeared Friday before Floyd R. Mannon, municipal judge pro tom. as a prosecuting witness. "You used to be janitor in a building where I had an office," Steinmetz continued. "And you ran up a telephone bill of sl2 on me talking to your girl friend at Lake Wawasee. And some others in the building were stuck the same way." “That’s right," Rice admitted. Rice and a friend. Mrs. Lavena Chandler, 43, operator of a rooming house at the Camp street address were in court to testify against James Williams, 23, Negro, anew roomer, they accused of stealing $2 which had been hidden in a dictionary', and of using physical violence to back tip his denial of the theft. Williams was fined $1 on a charge drunkenness and a like amount for disorderly conduct, the fine in the latter case being suspended. ORGE CUT IN GOLF FEES Petition With 700 Signatures Is Presented to Sullivan. In a letter Friday Mayor Reginald . Sullivan transmitting a petition signed by 700 persons urging reduction of municipal golf course fees, J. Allen Dawson wrote in part: “I am informed certain of the municipal golf courses in Chicago have reduced the fees to 10 cents on week days, not including Saturdays. and that on Saturdays and Sundays, the fees are 25 cents. 1 also am Informed Louisville. Ky.. has reduced the fees to 25 cents, and likewise, as stated in the petition, practically every city has made substantial reduction in fees." Game conservationists who have been marking Alaska herring with metal tags find that they can later catch the fish with electro-magnets.
Most Important Thing Nothing is more important to an individual than good health. Without it, life is crippled and circumscribed. With good health, ANY obstacle caji be overcome. Every human being needs a minimum amount of exercise to keep his body machine functioning properly. Some are able to get the required stimulus to muscles and nervous system from the outdoor work in which they are engaged. Others can afford to belong to country clubs, gymnasiums, or other organizations where they get systematic exercise. But millions must work in offices or shops at sedentary occupations. They can still, by devoting a few minutes a day to SYSTEMATIC exercise in their own rooms, keep their bodies in good healthy condition. Our Washington bureau has ready anew bulletin or. HEALTHBUILDING EXERCISES that suggests a series of exercises and calisthenics for old and young, requiring no apparatus, that, if followed, will be of benefit to any individual. JUDGE PONDERS BOUNDARY WAR Decatur Residents Continue Battle to Prevent Annexation Step. Residents of Decatur township Friday continued their battle to prevent Perry township from annexing a strip of land on which is located a plant of the Indianapolis Power and Light Company. Argument on making permanent a restraining order against bounty commissioners to prevent the annexation was to continue through the afternoon before Superior Judge Joseph R. Williams. Counsel for Decatur township, Wymond Beckett. Emsley W. Johnson and Chester L. Zekield, contend that the petition seeking the change is invalid in that it does not comply with a state law requiring that residents and freeholders of both townships in an annexation proposal sign a petition. However, George Burkhart, Perry township attorney, contends that the two-townsliip provision is a matter within the discretion of county commissioners, and, therefore, a petition signed by residents of only one of the townships involved is valid. Williams asked that briefs be submitted on the point. The townships have engaged in a lengthy controversy over boundaries. The prize is the $5,000,000 light and power plant for taxation purposes. URGE CITIZENS TO CO-OPERATE IN JOBS DRIVE I Sullivan and Borinstein Ask for Aid in Modernization Campaign. Advantages of the city-wide modernization campaign were cited Friday by Mayor Reginald H. Sullivan and Lou's J. Borinstein, campaign chairman, in an appeal for citizens to co-operate in the movement. Possibility of property owners Improving and repairing homes, office buildings and other properties at “great savings" at this time was stressed by both leaders of the campaign. “If property owners make needed repairs at this time they not oniy can save money but will stimulate general business, throwing thousands of dollars into trade channels," the mayor stated. Leaders also declared the campaign will give jobs to several thousend tradesmen and other unemployed, and create additional pay rolls in the city. Borinstein announced appointment of Toner M. Overley, Better Business Bureau director, as chairman of the campaign speakers'committee. Overley will organize a committee of twenty-five speakers to appear before civic, luncheon and women's clubs to advertise the campaign.
