HITLER HALTS NAZI WAR ON STEEL HELMETS National Government Steps In. Frees Leaders Taken in Raids. BV CLIFFORD L. DAY United Prrn Staff ( orrrspondent BERLIN, March 30. Through intervention of the- national government, all leaders of the Steel Helmet organization arrested in the palati- j nate were released today, the war veterans' headquarters announced today. Nazi brown shirts, accusing the Steel Helmets of harboring Marxist Socialists, had staged numerous I raids in the palatinate, paralleling their recent activities in Brunswick. where scores of leaders were imprisoned over night. President Paul Von Hindenburg and Chancellor Adolf Hitler conferred on an unannounced subject. Criticises Nazi Chief Franz Seldto, labor minister and head of the Steel Helmets, in an official statement analyzing the recent Brunswick rift in the united rational front, admitted that local Steel Helmet, leaders had violated national laws by mass acceptance of new members. He criticised sharply the Brunswick interior minister, a Nazi, for putting a hasty ban on the entire Steel Helmet organization in Brunswick. He added: “The comradely and excellent cooperation of the Reich's government, which I consider the most important objective in the present situation, to date has not been affected by interference of local officials.” Prepare Jewish Boycott Formation of the government's committee to manage the anti-Jew-ish boycotts effective at 10 a. m. Saturday, continued today. A national boycott committee at Munich is headed by Nazi Deputy Joseph Streicher. The wave of nationalism that has swept Germany in recent days was emphasized by reports from Kaiserslautern, In the Palatinate, where an immense crowd watched a public bonfire on which “all seven tocallv owned copies of Remarque's ‘Ail Quiet on the Western Front’ were burned. The orator of the occasion, Professor Engel, was cheered by the crowd when he declared that “all other un-German books in our municipal libraries will be consigned to the flames.” Cancel Doctors’ Contracts The National Socialist newspaper said: “While the crowd sang ‘Deutschland Uebor Alles,' the pyre burned, and the symbolic product of Jewish spirit and foreign civilization mounted to the heavens in nauseating smoke.” Contracts of twenty-eight Jewish doctors serving in municipal hospitals at Breslau were canceled. The government has adopted a measure dissolving the provisional economic council, a consultative body of 326 members representing all branches of German economic life. The organization will be replaced by anew council of sixty members, to be appointed by the president of the reich. COUNCIL TO HEAR NASH College Professor to Give Address on League of Nations.
