TERROR REVIVAL . FACES JEWS IN ' MIDDLE EUROPE Persecution Stretches to * Dim Past: Race Purity Myth Shattered. HARRY ELMER BARNES During the winter of 1926-27, one of the most widely read novels in American circles was the English translation of Lion Fruchtwanger’s i "Power." It went, through six large] p/-.ntings between October, 1926, and August, 1927. This was a remarkable candid story of the experiences of the .Jews in barly modern times —the days of the rise of modern capitalism. It frankly exposed both the avarice and intrigues of the Jews and the savagery and intolerence of their i politically dominant Gentile neighbors. Today the drama of centuries ago seems likely to be re-enacted in Germany. The Hit.herites have revived the anti-Semitism of Hellwaid and Stocker, which cursed Germany a half century ago, and have begun a reign of terror against 1 trie Jews unmatched in civilized countries for generations. Therefore, It may be both timely and illuminating to throw some historical light upon one of the •darkest and most reprehensible pages of human experience in the west, namely, the persecution of the Jews by the Gentiles, pagan and Christian. The starting point for any intelligent discussion of the historic campaigns against the Jews must be a clear comprehension of who the Jews actually are. It is a strange and somewhat ironical fact that the most extreme anti-Semites and the most fanatical Jewish nationalists agree in their support of the foremost myth connected with the Jews. This is that they represent a definite physical race which has come down from ancient Palestine with remarkable persistence and purity. Claims in Conflict At this point, however, the two groups split in their interpretation. The anti-Semites, represented by 1 writers like the German anthropologist, Friedrich von Hellwald, assail the Jews as a definitely anci permanently inferior race—a “cancer in the body politic." The most aggressive Jewish nationalists, on the other hand, are prone to persist in the claim that the are the chosen people of God and, as such, are markedly superior to the other examples of his handiwork. It hardly needs to be pointed out that both of these view's long since have been abandoned by both Jew'ish and Gentile scholars. Professor Dixon and Professor Herskovits, for example, unite in their firm repudiation of the idea that there ever has been any such thing as a distinct Jewish race or that one exi ists today. Let us turn to the facts. Ancient Palestine, the homeland of the Jews, was inhabited before 0 the Jewish settlement there by a mixture of the two great races of the near east, the long-headed Mediterranean race and the roundheaded Armenoid type, which has come in from Asia Minor. Spoke Semitic Language •The Jew's drifted in at varying intervals between 1800 B. C. and 1200 B. C. They were a Semitic people. But this means only that they spoke a Semitic language, not that they were a pure race. The ancient Semites, as a group, were so mixed that the greatest of * modern anthropoligists differ diametrically as to whether they belong to the round-headed or/ 'the long-headed type of man. When these highly mixed Jewish Semites—some of whom may have sojourned in Egypt—came to Palestine, they found, as we have seen, a mixed race already occupying the territory. A further racial amalgamation was the result. Then, for more than a thousand years, this exceedingly mixed racial group was invaded by every physical type of man in the near east and the racial mixture proceeded merrily. The Assyrians carred away five-sixths of the ancient tribes of Israel, and they disappeared from history, unless we accept the Mormon contention that they came to America as the ancestors of the I American Indians. Exiled by Babylon * The Babylonians took most of the remaining Jews on a long exile in Mesopotamia. Then came the Hellenistic age. in which the Jews mingled freely with Greeks, Syrians. /Egyptians and Romans. Therefore, it is quite evident that, by the time of the so-called Diaspora. or dispersion of the Jews, following the destruction of Jerusalem by Titus in 70 A. D . they were one of the most thoroughly mixed racial types to be found upon the planet at any time in human history. After the Diaspora, they settled in Arabia, northern Africa. Asia Minor, and in all parts of Europe as fast as the various areas of the latter were opened to civilizide habiliion. ■r* In spite of Jewish cultural solidarity and Gentile intolerance, the Jews ■ actually have mixed widely with the F peoples among whom they have setled since 70 A. D., still further increasing the excessive mixture which •.prevailed before that time. Therefore, it is evident to scholars ’ that the notion of a Jewish race has been one of the most mischievous fictions among the many historic myths which have plagued \ mankind. k This Is, of course, no reflection Vpon the Jews, since racial purity ,s JY advantage and no legitimate seijrce of pride.
