BANK PATRONS 'GETTING BACK ON CHECK BASIS Currency Withdrawals at ' Low Figure: Deposits Are Heavy. Indianapolis rapidly is jotting off a cash basis, bankers reported today, as the public is becoming accustomed again to using checks on reopened banks. Financed institutions today reported that heavy cash deposits v.<re continuing, with currency withdrawals at a low figuie. , and more cash is coming out oi hoarding, some from hiding places in homes and some from safety deposits, as ihe public regains confidence in its financial institutions, sajd Arthur V. Brown, Indiana National bank and Union Trust Company president. The state banking department Was continuing its check of condition of state banks and was expected to announce names of a number of institutions changed from Class B to Class A rating. Class B banks are required to rest net withdrawals on the 5 per cent basis, with unlimited withdrawal privileges on funds deposited since Y>b. 25. Class A banks practically arc unrestricted, except for the injunction to prevent heavy cash withdrawals for hoarding. LANDING SPEED CUT RADICALLY BY WING FLAP New Device Is Hailed as Great Advance in Plane Safety. BY C. B. ALLEN Times Staff Writer NEW YORK. March 17.—Phenomenal results with anew airplane wing flap, developed by Zantford T. Granville, who designed and built the ship in which Jimmy Doolittle set anew land plane speed record of 296 miles an hour, have been obtained in secret tests at the Sprinkfield tMasfc.) airport, it was learned here today. The device, installed on the rec-ord-breaking racer without affecting its top speed, is reported to have cut the landing speed from ninety to sixty miles an hour. Engineers expect it will have a profound influence on commercial aviation this year by making still higher cruising speeds possibl- without abandoning the safe landing speed range. Built Into Monoplanes Granville’s invention is an improvement on the so-called “Zapp Flap,” brought out by Edward F. Zaparka and built into the Northrop all-metal monoplanes recently acquired by Bernt Balchen and Frank Hawks. The principle is almost as old as the airplane itself, these designers merely having mastered the practical application of its principles to high-speed airplanes. Both Balchen and Hawks are enthusiastic about the low landing speed of their new Northrop—they cruise at nearly 200 miles an hour and land at fifty or less. Granville Incredulous No one realized how revolutionary the development would be. however, before the experiments at Springfield. Even Granville is said to have been incredulous at the effect of the wing flaps on the fat-bodied, clipped-wing Gee Bee racer—a machine which flies faster than any other land plane in the world and previously landed faster than many ships fly. The effect of the flaps, which are attached to the trailing edge of the wing, is two-fold; they change the wing’s curvature, thereby increasing its lift for quicker take-offs and slower landings, and they create a drag resistance to the air which serves to slow up the airplane.
