BANKS OF CITY ARE BACK ON NORMAL BASIS Deposits and Withdrawals Below Figures of First Two Days. The mild flurry incident to reopening of Indianapolis Danks ended today. The situation is normal, except for a preponderance of deposits over withdrawals, bank officials reported. Total deposits today wore not expected to reach figures set the first two days of the banks’ reopening, although the morning’s business indicated deposits would continue to exceed withdrawals by a large percentage. Total deposits in Indianapolis clearing house banks Wednesday were $7,392,000. Tuesday the deposits in cash and checks aggregated more than $8,000,000. Tuesday’s cash withdrawals of $-538,000 were mostly in the form of pay roll checks which had accumulated during the banking holiday. Fewer pay roil checks were cashed Wednesday, although a few firms paid by check Wednesday and pay roll checks were expected to be almost a rarity today. Officials of downtown banks today reported the public accepting the situation even more calmly

than during the first two days the banks were open. Their patrons, they said, apparently understand the situation and feel thorough confidence in the reopened banks. Few questions were being asked. A list of reopened Class B state banks was expected to be issued at the state '.anking department today. Reports from the department Wednesday revealed that 260 Class A state banks were open throughout the state. Officials in the smaller neighborhood banks of Indianapolis reported practically normal business Wednesday and today. Local banks were continuing today to ship excess currency to the federal reserve bank at Chicago, as patrons continued to deposit currency to the point where vaults contained more than the banks wish to keep on hand. It was stated that there is little possibility of any shipments of the new emergency currency issued ' y the government being received here, as most banks have more money on hand than they require. The banks still were receiving gold coins and certificates brought
out of hoarding, although the amount was less than was received immediately following the President's anti-hoarding proclamation, indicating that a large percentage of the hoarded gold in this vicinity had been returned to the banks.
