‘HORSE THIEF' LAW REPEALED Klan Era ‘Detective’ Groups Banned by Assembly Action. Indiana's law under which "horse thief detectives” associations, notorious during the reign of the KuKlux Klan, were organized, is repealed by a bill passed 56 to 27 by the house of representatives during the final session Monday. The bill was a senate measure. Pleas for repeal were made by Representatives Samuel Feiwell, South Bend, and John F. Ryan. Terre Haute, both Democrats. Referring to klan days in the state Feiwell declared: "The state has redeemed itself in part. Let us redeem ourselves entirely by repealing this law.” Ryan declared repeal would remove "the last vestige of the system old man Stephenson set up in Indiana." Opponents of repeal were led by Representative Herbert H. Evans, Newcastle, Republican floor leader, who said that abolishing the “horse thief” law would prevent organizing groups of detectives, merchant policemen and bank vigilantes. His amendment to repeal the law' only to the extent of eliminating the words “horse thief detective associations,” was lost. SAVED BY FLIP OF COIN Memphis Couple Sees Friends Die in Airplane Crash. Rh I nilcrl Prim MEMPHIS, Tenn., March 7.—A toss of a coin saved the lives of Dr. and Mrs. C. S. Simkins. Choosing places for a night flight with friends over the Memphis airport, they won the first trip. Three of their friends were killed in the second flight a few minutes after the Simkins had exchanged places with them.
