March 4 Stock jßiid commodity markets surged upward Friday in pre-inauguration rally induced by period of frantic short covering. The stock market floundered about for a time after a steady opening. In the late morning, shorts took fright and their covering brought prices up 1 to 6 points from early lows to net gains ranging above 4 points. On that rebound tickers strained to keep pace, and at one time were 4 minutes late. Meanwhile wheat scored gains of more than 2 cents a bushel ana other commodities made corresponding advances. Bonds alone were exceptions to the trend. United States government Issues eased to new lows for the year on high money rates and bank selling, but they rallied before the close. Grains Held at ( lose The feverish activity on the stock market lasted only a short time, but prices held most of the gains to the close. Sales in the period from 10:30 to 12 o'clock totaled 700,000 shares. Gains at the close ranged upward to 4 points Rom the previous close in stocks. Wheat closed up l’l to 2 cents; corn up 1 U to 1% cents, and rye up 17 to IS cents. Substantial .gains were made by hogs, wool, cof- ’ fee, sugar, cotton, sugar and cotton seed oil. Spot sliver rose to equal its high for the year. On the bulge in the share market, American Telephone jumped from a low of 95 1 to 101 Vi, the latter up 3 * net; Allied Chemical from 73 '4 to 79'-, up 5; American Tobacco B .S3 to 57, up 3 1 i; Atchison from33l6 1 io 39\, up 2 7 x; Union Pacific 66'k to 71 1 2, up 4; United States Steel 24 'a to 28, up 3'k; Case 327 to 377, up 37, and United Aircraft 17% to 20, up 27. Shorts Rush to Cover Shorts w'ere frightened by expectation of a restriction on short selling. That had been rumored in ‘the Street for several days. It.was discovered late today that the exchange does not plan to make any change whatsoever in short selling arrangements which now operate to make a free and open market. It was anticipated that PresidentElect Roosevelt would make a favorable statement in his inaugural address Saturday and that also was a factor in the sudden upturn. Shorts sought to buy stock and found offerings light. Hence, they were required to bid up the market. Meanwhile, the banking situation throughout the United States continued to command attention of the financial district. Heavy withdrawals by interior banks from New York were noted in the weekly federal reserve report. Call Money at 4 Per Cent v These withdrawals brought further firmness into the money market and call funds jumped to 4 per cent after renewing at 37 per cent. Today was the fitst time call money has been at 4 per cent since Dec. 29, 1930. All other money rates followed call money higher. The local rediscount rate was boosted to 37 from 27 per cent last night. Clearing huse banks today raised interest rates in an effort to bid against further withdrawals of funds from New York. The weekly reserve report registered the inroads of the banking moratoria. Money in circulation jumped $732,000,000; gold holdings 000,0' > was a loss in monetary gold st' 1 credit to the amount of T 000,000 was dumped into the Kct. by the reserve.

Just 300 years ago, Galileo published a book, in which he stated that the earth revolved about the sun, and no sooner was it published than he was ordered to report to Rome. Because the Scriptures said, “The earth hath He established that it shall not be moved,” this new theory, now known to be a fact, could not be tolerated. Other men had been burned at the stake for unorthodox views, and Galileo, rather than suffer a like fate, signed papers of abjuration. BULLISH NEWS FORCES WHEAT UP 2 L2CENTS Market Ends Day With Good Gains. Although Top Is Not Held. BY HAROLD E. RAINVII.I.E l nlted Pres* Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, March 4 The wild upturn of the morning in the face of continued unfavorable banking news sent wheat prices to the highest levels since mid-January on the Board of Trade Friday. The full 2' -c rise was not held as profit-taking quickly appeared and trading quieted to a more sedate pace. However, the market remained well above the previous close. Buying by New York interests set off the bulge with the Morgenthau statement heartening. Pessimism disappeared and there was no pressure. Stocks ran up sharp gains and butter and eggs, sugar, rubber and other commodities followed. Cotton was up sharply. Corn and oats followed wheat. Provisions gained nearly 20 points. * Close Is Strong At the close wheat was 17 to 17 cent higher, corn 17 cent higher, oats 7 cent higher, rye 17 to 1-7 cent higher and barley was 7 cent higher. Provisions were firm. Commssion houses absorbed the surplus in the pit early and when the buying began stop-loss orders were uncovered. Offerings were light on the early rally and the rise was rapid. The pit was caught unawares and traders bewildered. Morgenthau's announcement he intended to get the government out of stabilization, was thought to be a factor. Cash prices were unchanged. Receipts w Ire four cars. Cash Corn Higher Commission house buying on resting orders kept corn firm early and the market shot up 17 cents at mid-session on strength induced by the action in wheat. Country offerings were next to nothing and sales were 50.000 bushels early. Trading was the most active in weeks. Cash prices were 7 to 7 cent higher. Receipts were 133 cars. Oats participated in the general upturn and showed 7 to 7 cent higher at mid-morning, after July had set anew low early. Rye shot up 17 to 27 cents with wheat at mid-morning. Cash prices were unchanged. Receipts were 22 cars. Chicago Futures Range WHEAT— - MarUl 3 - prev Open. High. L(m. Close, close!
