CREW FALTERS IN IDENTIFYING KILLER SUSPECT Mystery of ‘Man at the Porthole' Heightened During Trial. BV VINCENT MAHONEY I Prr** staff f orre*t>nndrnt LONG BEACH. Cal.. Fob. 9.- The mystery of thr man at Lhr porthole" was heightened by faltering prosecution witnesses Wednesday as the state's case against William .James Guy. charged with the shipboard murder of Captain Walter Wanderwell, drew rapidly to a close. With only a few police investigators to be called, the jury was left; with conflicting evidence as to the identity of a man who boarded the yacht Carma last Dec. 5 shortly before Captain Wanderwell, a noted adventurer, was shot dead. Two young men and two girls, members of the Carina's commonwealth adventure crew, all saw the man's face through the screened porthole that night. Os these, only one of the girls said she was positive he was Guy, the man whom the state charges was bitter against Wanderwell and had quarreled with him a few days previously. To Call Newspapermen Cuthbert. Mills, young British engineer, testified Wednesday. He said he "thought'' the man wore a hat, as opposed to testimony of Marion Smith, a girl witness, who claimed it was a cap. "Didn't you tell newspapermen you couldn't identify the face because the night was too dark?" he was asked. "No," shouted Wills. Eugene McOann, representing Guy, .said he would call six newspapermen later to testify on this point, and then resumed. Tells of Identification "Didn't you quarrel with Edmund Zeranski (another prosecution witness* and didn't, he eall you a liar?" i "No." said Wills. "We just disagreed over Zeranvki's statement j that I picked up Wanderwell's body j w hen we found him dead in his ! cabin. He didn’t eall me names." Wills went into his first identifi- j ration of Guy. which took place in \ Ihe jail. "I hesitated at first and then picked out, Guy when he said some- j thing." Wills explained. But. I I ceased the identification because j his voice didn’t sound anything like ! that of the man at the porthole." Birthday Celebrated Uniquely ftp I nilni l‘>' i ALMA. Irene Dunne Appears in Dramatic Cinema Role "The Secret of Madame Blanche" With Lionel Atwill as an Embittered Man, Opens Friday for Week at Palace. THF SECRET OF MADAME BLANCHE." anew Metro-Goldwvn-Mayer film wih Irene Dunne heading a stellar ca.st, is opening an exclusive Indianapolis engagement at Loews Palace theater. Friday. The picture, based on Martin Brown's notable stage play, "The Lady." is describee as presenting a vivid cross-section of life.. The story of "The Secret of Madame Blanche." which rovers a period of thirty years, first presents Miss Dunne as a member of the chorus of a large New York musical show. The production is taken to England and the show girl marries a titled young blade who consequently becomes involved in a series of complications and commits
suicide. The young widow is left with a baby son, but she soon loses him, too, for the unsympathetic father-in-law takes the child away from her by the process of law. Then comes a period of wandering about the capitals of Europe until the time of the World war when she unexpectedly finds her son during a case brawl. A man is killed in the fracas, and to shield her son, Miss Dunne shoulders the blame without revealing her identity. She is convicted to life imprisonment but an unexpected turn in the story brings out a thrilling smash climax. Lionel Atwill, the famous stage character actor who recently turned to the screen and scored an outstanding performance in "Doctor X." plays the role of the embittered father-in-law. Phillips Holmes, whose last two productions were "Night Court" and An American Tragedy," both of which were decided hits, has the role of the young Englishman who after marriage is driven to suicide. The cast also contains such names as Douglas Walton, young English actor who made his debut to American audiences in “Cavalcade”; Una Merkel. C. Henry Gordon, Jean Parker and Mitchell Lewis. Charles Bra bin directed the production. The laugh highlight of an otherwise serious program brings Laurel and Hardy in their latest hysterical vehicle, "Towed in a Hole.” As fish peddlers these two seek to solve the serious and perplexing problem of the middle man in business. They conceive the brilliant idea of eliminating the profiteer, more commonly known as the middleman to merchants. Catching your own fish and selling it yourself, naturally brings all the profits. That's what the boys set out to do. When the. toll of a fish long day is o'er, the tally is in favor of a load of laughs. As an extra added attraction the first talking picture ever made on

LONG, BITTER ! BATTLE AHEAD, WETS WARNED Repealists See Trouble If Congress Fails to Fix Ratification Plan. BY RAYMOND CLAPPER United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON Feb. 9.—Prohibition repeal leaders warned their followers today that a long hard fight lies ahead. Jouett Shouse, president of the Association Against the Prohibition Amendment, issued his annual, report declaring that repeal was bei ing fought both by conscientious | drys and by the underworld which I wanted to preserve its lucrative| illegal source of bootleg income. "The repeal forces of the nation are confronted with the anomalous j situation of having to overcome.
