BILL PROVIDES GROSS INCOME TAX IN STATE Measure Would Require Returns on Earnings Over S9OO. Establishment of a gross income tax system, the levy to be set by the state tax board, is asked in one of the twelve new bills introduced in the house of representatives today. Representative Edward P. Barry • Dem., Indianapolis), is the sponsor of the bill. Single persons with an income of S9OO a year or more, and the head of a family with an income of SI,BOO or more are required to file returns. No indication of the amount of levy is given in the bill, this being solely within the province of the state lax board. Provision for payment of the tax in four installments in a year is provided. Indianapolis real estate would be assessed annually for taxation under the terms of a bill introduced by Representative John F. White • Dem., Indianapolisi, The first assessment would be made this year. It authorizes appointment of not more than five real estate appraisers by the township assessors. Salary of an appraiser would not be in excess of $3,250 a year. Persons advertising receiver's sales and other "bargain rushes'' would be compelled to pay a license fee of $25 under a bill introduced by Representative Bern B. Grubb (Deni., West Lafayette*. Representative James V. Kent fDem., Hillisburg), is sponsor of a bill which would require school text book publishers to file a price list with the state superintendent of public instruction and provide bond.
KM I fere’s sweet news! I-'fT’cc-tiye today we will give free a haif-pound box of Nichol’s Chocolates of Charm, made right here in Indianapolis and the finest quality obtainable (retail value of f>3 cents) with 7 gallons of Ily-Ked AntiKnock or Ethyl Gasoline or with a grease job or oil change. Treat your car to the best in gas and lubrication and your girl or family to really delicious chocolates. B B B Maybe were wrong' but we can't figure nut how the return to normal times will he effected bv loading the public with more and more taxes. With consumer buying power now at low tide because of depleted earnings, the addition of a Sales Tax means still greater privation and hardship for thousands whose meager wages barely cover the necessities of life. In addition the measure will bring disaster to hundreds of merchants because of curtailed purchases, and this, in turn, will throw many hundreds out of employment who are now earning their bread and butter in retail establishments. If you, as one from whose pocket this money must come, object to this additional inroad on your livelihood, now is the time to voice your disapproval through your representatives and senators in the legislature by letters of protest and petitions among your friends. BBS If this barter and swap system keeps up we may have ads like this: Will swap 1905 wife for later model and pay the difference. B B B If Japan keeps on threatening to quit the League some day the League will surprise Japan and ask for her resignation. a a b The Chief Tire Changer ROSE TIRE CO., INC. 930 N. Kate Smith and A1 Jolson Open Friday in New Films ‘Hello. Everybody' Introduces Radio Singer as Movie Star at Indiana: Comedian Featured at Palace. KATE SMITH, queen of radioland. will make her debut as a movie star in ' Hello. Everybody." which opens at the Indiana theater Friday for a week's engagement. "Hello. Everybody" was written especially for her by Fannie Hurst and it. is as a full-fledged actress, rather than as a radio star on parade, that Miss Smith makes her screen debut. However, the voice that sings nightly to the radio audience is heard to full advantage in the film. Besides old favorites, she sings four new songs—" Moon Song." "Pickamnies' Heaven," "Out in the Great Open Spaces," and "Twenty Million People."
They were written especially for her by Sam Cosiow and Arthur Johnston. Miss Smith is supported in the picture by a cast headed by Randolph Scott and Sally Blane. She appears in the role of a farm girl who leads her fellow-farmers in a ! battle against a power company which is attempting to condemn their property for a water-power development. Ed Resener and the Indiana Concert. Orchestra will offer a musical presentation with Billie Leonard, "sweet singing Miss,” and Frank Parrish, popular Indianapolis tenor. nan In "Hallelujah. I'm a Bum.” his new picture which is opening an exclusive Indianapolis engagement at Loews Palace theater Friday. A1 Jolson corralled a cast of Hollywood comedians the like of which has never before been seen in one film production unit. The story of "Hallelujah. I'm a Bum.” written especially for Jolson by Ben Hecht, lends itself admirably to comedy, but it is the pathetic and poignant sort rather than slapstick. First Harry Langdon. comedy star, was selected for one of the principal roles, and then Chester Conklin and his walrus mustache were signed. Frank Morgan. Broadway star, came next, and Tammany Young, who has played both on Broadway

and in Hollywood, stepped into the picture, too. Bert Roach, who has been the comic appeal in scores of films, won one of the coveted roles, and Victor Potel, veteran film comedian, was also signed. There was one role, however, which caused some difficulty. This was the part of a young negro roustabout whose portrayal had to be of a high standard. Hundreds of were interviewed and turned down. Then Jolson, attending a cheap neighborhood theater one night, ran across Edgar (Blue Boy) Connor. He was signed and did the role in the picture.
