fOWN SHUTS UP SHUP FOR WEEK IN BANK CRISIS 100 Firms Close Doors Due to Calling of Business Moratorium. B< / f hilf'l I'ri f MT. CARMEL. 111., Jan 26. One? hundred business places were closed for a week today as an emergency business moratorium. ' declared by Mayor T. B. Wright and the Mt. Carmel city council went into effect alter a series ol all-night conferences. Business leaders, conferring with city officials and directors of the American First National bank, agreed to the "business moratorium" early today. At. opening time the 100 business establishments posted a copy of Mayor Wright's proclamation calling for closing of all business establishments with the exception of grocery stores, the newspaper, a untility company office, and bus and railroad depots. Town's Leaders Hein The first of the moratorium'' conferences was called late Wednesday. Directors of the American First National bank called leading business for the conference. It was cxplain?d business eonriitioas had caused a steady drain cn the institution's resources. The directors asked co-operation and advice from the business leaders. E. A Cleary was named chairman of an ‘emergency moratorium" committee to decide what action should be taken. Cleary called a series of conferences with other business leaders. Hope (o Steady Business Cleary and a delegation of business men then called upon Mayor Wright, and asked that he issue a proclamation closing all business houses. Mayor Wright called a special meeting of the city council. The councilmen agreed to the proclamation. "We hope to improve and steady business here through this moratorium," Cleary said today. “We will be closed for only a week, and at the end of that time we expect to have carried out plans laid at our emergency meetings.” ‘TRY AND COLLECT.’ SAYS BOARD TO CONTRACTOR Peeks Pay fur Work Done in 1925; “Too Late,” City Heads Decide. “Try and get it," was the answer of the works board today to a contractor who tried to collect $1,104.60 for work done in 1925. Frank J. Noll Jr., attorney, in a letter to the board, declared that Charles Schwert, local contractor, put in a sidewalk and completed grading and curbing on St. Paul street from Terrace avenue to a point 526 feet south of Terrace avenue. The city engineer, the letter said, recommended that the sidewalk be accepted by the board, but, through oversight on the part of both the engineer and the contractor, no contractor, no recommendation ever was made on the grading and curbing. Hence. Schwert got no pay which, under the contract, should have been $1,104.60, according to the letter. "A contractor who spends seven or eight years remembering that money is owed him shouldn't get it," was the decision of the board. “Let him try and get it.”

No. My friend, the late Houdini, performed, by purely mechanical means, everything that he ever heard of as having been done by a “psychic.” Scientists can not find the slightest evidence or “thoughtwaves,” or any "influence” the mind can exercise beyond ordinary speech and physical expression. It is not absolutely proved there are no "psychics,” but scientists can not discover any proof of them. 3. Yes, psychologists agree that such fears may influence us for a life time. A father frightens his baby throwing it up, or holding it out the window, and at fifty the mature man is afraid to go into high buildings. If children repeatedly are ridiculed, they often feel inferior all their lives. These are but two of many examples.

PROPOSES TO ABANDON CITY AIR MAIL RUN Postal Chief Urges Congress to Drop Line From Here to Chicago. 1 Abandonment of several air mail routes, including the line from Chicago to Indianapolis, is proposed in a program submitted to the bouse ; postoffice committee by PostmasterGeneral Walter Browm. The proposal was made by Brown, he said, in order to effect a subj stantial saving to the government in annual operating costs. Wire dispatches from Washington telling of the proposal failed to state whether or not the Indian-apolis-Cincinnati section of the line would be continued as a mail run. | Local authorities had received no | information on the proposal. It is believed that if the Indian- \ apolis-Chicago mail run should be | abandoned, the line still would be operated tempararily by American Airways as a passenger line. | The Cincinnati-Indianapolis mail run probably would be continued, jit Is believed, because it connects Cincinnati with the Transconti-nental-Western Air westbound mail lines. Brown's proposal would call for establishment of several new mail | lines, including one from Evans- j ville to Louisville; Columbus, 0., to Toledo; Columbus to Chicago. Boston to Milwaukee, and Los Angeles to San Francisco. The Cincinnati-Indianapolis-Chi-cago mail line was inaugurated Dec. 17. 1927, and was the first regular mail and passenger air line touching Indianapolis. Probability of repeal of the Wright bone dry law is among allegations ! contained in a petition for release on bail in the supreme court case of a convicted Madison, Ind., dry 1 law violator facing a year's imprisonment. In a petition fiied today before the court by Ralph Spaan, Indianapolis attorney, assertion is made that repeal of the state's enforcement act probably would lead to pardoning of the offender by the Governor. The prisoner is Nicholas Barron. ! who was convicted Jan. 14. Another allegation made as a reason why bail should be allowed is that the search warrant, directed to a constable, was served by the Jefferson county sheriff.
