OLEO TAX CILL STIRS BATTLE Amendments Fly in Bitter Skirmish on Floor of House. The house of representatives tod?.y embroiled itself in a fight over the Curry-Ale-Cromer oleomargarine tax bill as it was handed down by Speaker Earl Crawford for second reading. Amendments and motions to table followed each other in rapid succession as Representative John Napier Dyer <Dem., Vincennes) proposed to exclude imports of cocoanut oil for oleomargarine since cocoanut oil is imported into the United States duty free. “This is one gap in the Republican high tariff wall which strangles domestic competitiono," Dyer charged. The amendment carried. Representative Albert Walsman (Dem., Indianapolis), asserted that the proposed 5 cents a pound tax would work a hardship on the poor, because they consume the bulk of oleomargarine used. Walsman moved for indefinite postponement, but was beaten on a standing vote. Dyer then offered an amendment to raise the tax from 5 cents a pound to 10 cents. “That’s only an effort to kill the bill—l move to table it,” shouted Representative H. H. Evans (Rep.. Newcastle). The amendment was defeated as also was one by Representative Fred Galloway (Dem., Indianapolis), to reduce the tax from 5 cents to 1 cent. Representative Jesse Curry (Dem., Vevay), retorted that “it looks like the people of Indianapolis are against the farmer,” as the bill was advanced to third reading.
