GRAIN FUTURES REACT AFTER INITIAL RALLY Wheat Advances Early on Strength in Securities; Dips at Close. BY HAROLD E. RAINVILLE l nited Press Stiff Correspondent CHICAGO, aJn. 21.—Strength in stocks sent wheat prices shurply higher on the Board of Trade during the early session Friday, but weakness at Winnipeg brought them back again. Prices dropped under the previous close around noon and thereafter held Rear the bottom. Inflation talk here and in Canada and the bullish outlook for the winter wheat crop were strong factors. Trading was light and the market easily influenced. Corn showed more activity, but lost its advance when wheat turned weak. Oats held to a narrow range. Rye was dull. Close Is Lower At the close wheat was % to cent lower; corn unchanged; oats unchanged to % cent higher; rye % to % cent lower, and barley % cent higher. Provisions were .about steady. Improvement in corn advanced prices above the opening. The lower Liverpool cables were offset *by strength in stocks at the start. Liverpool recovered to close % cent lower. Winnipeg weakened as the session progressed. Cash prices were unchanged. Receipts were one car. Cash Com Higher Corn experienced a good advance during the morning after getting a firm start from wheat. Prices moved up until profit-taking was met, but held % to % cent of the gains at mid-session. Reports of locust damage in Argentina and expectations of further export business had considerable effect. Bookings were 35,000 bushels. Cash prices were *4 to % cent higher. Receipts were 76 cars. Oats was featured by buying of May and selling of July, although both months advanced % to U cent early with the major grains. Selling was credited to a Northwest account. Rye was easy, unchanged to *4 cent lower at mid-morning. Cash oats was unchanged to % cent higher, with nine cars received. Just thirty years ago Ernest Archdeacon put up his offer of 3.000 francs (about 20 cents a franc, at that time) to the first aviator who could fly only twentyfive meters (about eighty feet) with a descent of not more than eight meters in doing so. Not until three years later was the prize won, when Alberto San-tos-Dumont, a Brazilian living in Paris, accomplished the then remarkable feat of flying 200 feet at a speed of twenty-five miles an hour.
