POE, WHITMAN GREAT POETS, SAYS WILDER Outrank Longfellow, Whittier, He Tells Town Hall Group at English’s. America may not. have “a golden but she may have a ' moderate age,” In literature and the fine arts. I horn ton Wilder, author, told a Town Hall audience at English's today. Wider maintained that a great genius slips in so smoothly and quietly that the great authors and poets of any age never get their real deserts until years after their deaths. The great American poets are not Longfellow or Whittier,” he said. The truly great ones were Edgar Allan Poe, a drunken poet, and Walt Whitman, an accentric. Poes greatness. according to Wilder, is not for writing “The Raven” and exciting mystery stories, but for writing “just a handful of lyrics.” All the w r ill power in the world ean't make great lyrics, but Poes lyrics will outlive the ages,” he said. Whitman's greatness rests in his ability to catalog American civilization. Whitfnan’s true worth is more universally appreciated in Europe than in America, said Wilder. \ t “Tom Sawyer” always will remain 'a perpetual document” because it ! fells the truth about boys, said Wilder. Mark Twain did a great service in writing ‘Tom’,” he asserted. 7,927 Given Work in 1932 The Indianapolis employment! bureau in 1932 provided work for 7,927 persons, George E. OFFICER WIPES OUT LONE CLEW IN GIRL'S DEATH Thoughtlessly Closes Book Believed to Explain Suicide Reason. Bj) T'nitrd Press MADISON, Wis.. Jan. 20.—A policeman thoughtlessly closed an open book which he found in Inar Olberg s room Thursday night, and thus possibly wiped out the only clew to why the 21-year-old state clerk committed suicide. Miss Olberg was a health devotee who drank three quarts of milk each day, took violet ray treatments every day, and read many books on personal magnetism. She was a clerk in the state department of agriculture offices. Her body, nude, was found Thursday night in her room. She had looped a belt around a door knob and hanged herself. On her bed lay a health encyclopedia, open. An officer closed it without noting the page. Later other officers believed that because of the girl’s interest in health subjects the explanation of her suicide probably could have been found on the page left displayed for them to read.
