200 GANGSTERS WRECK PLANT Three-Story Building Is Sabotaged as Result of Strike. Bji TSnitfd Pr< ss YOKOHAMA, Jan. 18. —Forty persons were injured here today when a band of 200 gangsters, be- ; lieved to have been hired by striking workers, sabotaged the three-1 story Yokohama plant of the Singer I Sewing Machine Company. A. K. Aurcll, Japan-born American manager of the plant, estimated damage would amount to several hundred thousand dollars. Police quelled the disturbance after a furious fight between the attackers and employes of the plant. Two employes were reported to have been critically injured. The American consulate was informed that police arrested 138 of the gangsters. Swarming into the plant unexpectedly during the lunch hour, the gang began demolishing furniture, machines and valuable records. Guards and employes seized chairs and ink bottles for weapons and attempted to drive off the attackers. The interior of the modern building, located on the Bund, was badly damaged. POISONOUS WEED NEW PROBLEM OF SHEEPMEN Rubbcnvood Slowly Crowding Out Good Forage Plants. JP.y Science Service WASHINGTON, Jan. 18.—Bitter rubberwood, a plant belonging to the aster family, has been growing into a serious problem to sheep raisers in a part of western Texas, A. B. Clawson, physiologist of the bureau of animal industry, told an audience of biologists here today. Due apparently to over-use of the grazipg land and to climatic factors, the weed has been increasing In abundance while good forage plants have been growing scarcer, with the result that the sheep have been driven to this poisonous food. It is estimated that 75,000 of them died in an area of 6,000 square miles during the winters of 1929-30 and 1930-31. The cause of the sheep losses was not at first known, but because of the abundance of the bitter rubberwood in the affected area it was placed under suspicion, and an investigation by scientists of the U. S. Department of Agriculture resulted in its conviction. The plant is known to botanists as Actinea odorata. u ■ ANNOUNCEMENTS 1 Death Notices BARTHIX, MARY—Ace 76. beloved mother of Mrs. George W.
