‘DOG DENTIST? IT IS NOT SO!' SAYS PICCARD ‘Such a Thing to Say of Me/ Asserts Scientist as He Lands in U. S. BY H. AI.LhN SMITH l nited I‘rrss Stuff Cortetpomlrtit NEW YORK, Jan. 13.—Professor Auguste Piccard, the man who has been farth?r away from the earth than any of the rest of us, is in New York today, more anxious to tell how he pulled the thorns off a rosebush to avoid scratching children than how he ascended twice into the stratosphere. The lanky Swiss savant, with his wind-blov.n bob and timid smile, came to New York Thursday on the liner Champlain, and was set upon by reporters and cameramen the moment his ship reached quarantine. What, the reporters wanted to know, about this story that the conqueror- of the stratosphere had pulled the teeth of his neighbor's dog to keep the beast from biting his own children? “Such a Thing to Say” “Me a dog dentist!” exclaimed Professor Piccard. ‘Such a thing to say of me! I, who love dogs! Some little reporter had white paper before him and he must write something on it. So he wrote that!” The professor, during his ordeal with the newspaper men, was even more retreating than that other great scientist, Albert Einstein. Facing an imposing battery of still and sound cameras on the deck, he strove valiantly to obey the instructions—to smile, to laugh, to frown, to turn this way, to turn that way, to look up, to look down, to look at the skyline, to point to the stratosphere. “Two Can Play at This” Finally, with his nerves a-jitter, be shouted: "Two can play at this game!” Forthwith he jerked a small camera from his pocket and began clicking it at the photographers. In the children’s playroom of the Champlain the reporters waited ■with paper and pencil, fuming and frothing over the length of time the cameramen were taking. Suddenly, the tall professor thrust his head through the door. He looked wildly about the room, then turned and fled. A moment later his lecture manager returned and explained things. Professor Piccard, he said, can’t .stand the smell of smoke. One of his lecture stipulations, he said, provides that there shall be no smoking wherever he speaks. Plans Third Flight Here The reporters snuffed out their cigarets and the professor returned bravely. As soon as the mixup between the dog and the rosebush had been settled, Professor Piccard took up the matter of stratosphci e flights. He i has traveled more than ten miles above the surface of the earth twice in his balloons. He explained that he was to come to America to plan a third flight from the Hudson bay district. The magnetic pole is in America and he feels that he will be able to learn many new things about the cosmic ray through an ascent over here. St. Louis leather goods j manufacturer, declared today, “111 become a lion hunter if I have to take the lions to Africa to hunt them.” A previous effort by Wright to be- j come a lion hunter ended humorously—to everybody except him—when two deputies and a newspaper man killed his lions on a Mississippi river island while the hunting party was at lunch. “I’ve got two more lions now and all I need is a place to hunt them—peacefully,” said Wright, “No newspaper men will accompany the party | and all deputy sheriffs will be searched.” BURGLAR SUSPECTS GO TO NOBLESVILLE Face Trial for SBOO Robbery of Fishers Hardware Store. S2OO Reward for Best Answers on Infidelity
Cash Awaits Writer of Best Letters on Topic That Affects Many. Do people who preach the doctrine of free love and infidelity, even under the sacred bonds of matrimony, really believe what they preach? Notable examples prove that they do not. Percy Byssbe Shelley, one of the greatest students and poets that the world ever has known, is an example. Shelley was married happily. At that time, one of the better known men of England was preaching and. writing fiery doctrines for free love. He encouraged it highly, yet, when Shelley left his own wife and ran off with the daughter of this man, he became enraged and sought Shelley, that he might get revenge. Ronald Colman and Kay Francis come face to face with this question of infidelity in "Cynara,” the picture opening today at Loew’s Palace theater. "Cynara” plunges deeply into the
