BANDITS KIDNAP DRIVER, ELUDE COPS IN CHASE Garage Man Is Forced to Pilot Stolen Car in Crooks' Flight. Two bandits in a stolen automobile which was a target for a police j bullet escaped early today with the car, after robbing a garage attendant they had forced to drive on a trip to Noblesville and had threatened to kill. Mrs. Robert F. Smith, 2536 North Meridian street, is the owner of the car, which is kept in a garage at Thirty-fourth and Illinois streets. The garage attendant forced to serve as chauffeur was Jack Clark, 20. of 465 Virginia avenue. Two officers in a police car noticed the stolen automobile shortly before midnight at Broadway and Westfield boulevard. A man stood at the side, and the scene had the appearance of a holdup. Chase Is Started As the police stopped their car, the other was driven away, and a chase started. One shot was fired from the police car, but the other sped on. At Riviera drive and Cornell avenue, police drove their car against the I other, but it was not halted. The j police machine rebounded and struck two parked automobiles. None of the cars was damaged greatly. j The bandits outdistanced the po- , lice after the chase had reached a ! point three miles north of Broad Ripple. Clark said he was in front of the Smith home preparing to drive the car to the garage when two bandits entered it, and he was lorced to drive to Broadway and Westfield boulevard, where he was robbed of $5, which later was returned to him. “We'll Get You First” “If the police get us, we will get you first,” was the warning to Clark as the officers approached. Clark did the driving during the chase. He then took the bandits to Noblesville, then drove back toward Indianapolis, and at a point on the Allisonville road six miles south of Noblesville he was forced from the car. The bandits then fled in the auto. Clark said that the bandits returned $5 to him. He was forced to contribute 29 cents towards the purchase of five gallons of gasoline on the way back from Noblesville. It is the oractice on many railroads to keep the locomotives hot at all times except during re pairs, because heating and cooling expand and contract metal boilers, with bad effect.

By T nif' it Picks WASHINGTON, Jan. 4—Preference would be given to granite and marble in construction of federal buildings irra senate resolution proposep today by Senator Henrik Shipstead (Farmer-Labor, Minn.). Unemployed workmen would benefit by such action, as most hard stone is fabricated by hand, Shipstead said. “The extensive rise of soft stone in federal buildings has caused great hardship on the granite and marble industry,” said Shipstead.
