‘EDUCATION’ IS CALLED CAUSE OF DEPRESSION Learning Failed in Needs of New Kind of World, Says Srr Norman Angell. “Education* was branded as the “ultimate cause* of the depression by Sir Norman Angell, author and member of the British parliament, before a Town Hall audience at English's today. •‘The ultimate cause of the depression is the kind of education which we have known in the past,” he said, “An education broadly similar in all the nations of the west.” Sir Angell maintained that this education “has failed to prepare those in charge to understand the new kind of world which the last half century has brought into being.” "The people who brought the world to such a mess ,‘n 1914, the European diplomats, were highly educated people,” he said. “The present economic system the world over has been managed by educated people. , “It is not Socialist agitators who have brought capitalism to its present mess.” The speaker maintained that prior to 1914, education played a stronger part in Germany than any other place in the world, and that that “education” did not prevent its from disintegrating. He maintained that our present conditions have been brought about “by a political chaos which is the result of Nationalism.” He declared that the disarmament conference, now sitting in Geneva, if attended by failure, will hasten possible chaos, because people must have confidence sh the money standards of the world. JULIUS kleinHay * QUIT FEDERAL POST May Not Wait Until March 4 to Accept Lucrative Post. By United Prctn WASHINGTON, Nov. 25. Dr. Julius Klein is considering accepting a highly paid job in private business which may necessitate his retirement as assistant commerce secretary before his term expires March 4. In one of the offers he would be adviser or public relations expert of a group of manufacturers; in another an executive of a retail merchandising concern doing business throughout the United States and abroad. Salaries would dwarf the one he now receives. Although represented as desiring to remain in the cabinet until the end of the Hoover regime, he stands prepared to accept one of the positions on short notice in the event his future employers desire him to go to work immediately.

Contract Bridge .
BY W. E. M’KENNEY Kecreterr American Brid*e I.earue SEVERAL times each year We are fortunate in securing from Philip E. Leon of Cleveland one of his most unusual and exceedingly cleverly played hands. He played the following hand with j his partner, Samuel Guggenheim, j also of Cleveland. This is the com- j bination that gained the reputation of being the greatest pair in the! country at auction bridge, and it certainly needed team work to wreck the declarer’s hopes in today’s hand. j ♦ A-K-J-10-6-3 VNont ♦ A-9-6-4-3 AA-7 * NORTH] *9-5-4 . m AQ-8-2 VK-Q- £ 5 VA-J----10-5-3 <2 9-6 ♦ J-7-5 * 4K-Q----aj tel*2k 47 VB-7-4-2 ♦ 8-2 The Bidding The bidding was rather brief—but direct. South and West passed, North opened with one spade. East overcalled with two hearts, West bid three hearts, and North went to four spades. While Leon in the East was fairly sure of setting the contract, he does not believe in doubling a contract unless he is quite confident of setting it at least two tricks. This is a safety factor, required by all good players in case of frea* distribution. The Play Leon in the East opened with the 1 ace of hearts, which was trumped by the declarer with the three of spades. The declarer then led the ace of diamonds. Would you carelessly play the ten? Leon carefully thought the hand out before playing. He could see that he and his partner could make a diamond trick, a spade trick, and possibly a club trick. How were they to win <he setting trick? Leon’s only chance was to find his partner with the jack of diamonds so that he could lead a spade and thereby prevent the declarer from getting a ruff in dummy. If Leon were to lead a spade, | while he might gain a diamond trick, declarer would gain a spade | trick. Therefore Leon discarded the king \

of diamonds. Declarer then led 'a small diamond and Leon played the ten of diamonds. South played the eight, and now fine partnership was demonstrated. Guggenheim in the West realized what his partner was attempting to do and. overtook the ten of diamonds with the jack, immediately returning a spade. The declarer took the finesse, Leon won with the queen of diamonds, and of course still could win a club trick, which was the setting trick. < Copyright, 1933, NEA Bervic*. Inc.)
