DARK PICTURE IS PAINTED OF VANISHING JOBS Magazine Fortune Shows How Millions Have Been .Ousted by Machines. tty Timet Special NEW YORK Nov. 25.—Declaring that “rapid acceleration of production of machine energy already has rendered a part of the human race obsolete and a further part obsolescent,” the December issue of Fortune apepars today with an article describing technological unemployment as “conceivably the most important issue of our time." “It is common knowledge that the * great industries have strained every ; resource in the present depression to eliminate labor costs and that! their success has been such that! even though pre-depression production were resumed on Jan. 1, 1933, there would remain an unem- j ployed population variously esti- j mated at four to six million,” Fortune declares. “But the significant fact ... is not present technological unemployment; it is the apparent trend toward rapidly increasing technological unemployment in the future. More Jobs Vanish “It has been estimated by those who enjoy long range forecasting that even if the productivity of industry by mechanization continues to increase in the next twenty-five years at the rate established in the last twenty-five, only forty-five men will be required in 1947 to do the work done in 1932* by seventy and in 1907 by one hundred. “For some two or three millions of years,” Fortune declares in the article, headed ‘Obsolete Men,’ “the world’s work was done by a patent automatic self-coaling mechanism of levers, joints and complicated controls with a maximum life of about three score years and ten, an average efficient working day of eight to twelve hours, and intermittent power production of one-tenth of one-horse power. . . “This mechanism sowed and cultivated and harvested the World’s corn, milled and baked its bread, wove its cloth, shaped its bricks, heeled its shoes. . . It was still doing the great bulk of the world’s work 100 years ago. . .” Summarizing the recent announcements of engineers and economists on the rapid advance of mechanization the article points out: .. . that if the steamship Europa obtained her motive power the way the Spartan Admiral Eurybiades obtained his at the Battle of Salamis she would have to carry sweep-pull?rs to the number of 3,000,000 men. Millions Lose Work “. . . that if 10,000 men had set out to dig the Panama canal the year the Pilgrims landed they would not yet have finished the digging of the earth and rock. . . that if the 1929 United States wheat crop had been grown in 1829, 6,000,000 men .. . would have been required . . . whereas 4,000 men using the best 1929 equipment could have done the whole job. “. . . that in one decade (1920-30) one manufacturer (General Electric) created new machinery capable of producing four times as much man power as the total wage earning population of the United States. “. . . that one man in 1930 could make as many needles a day as r r ,ooo men in 1830.” ANNOUNCEMENTS 1 Death Notices BONHAM, HALUE M.—Beloved wife of Prank A.
