WALZER United Press Financial Editor NEW YORK, Nov. 19.—The stock market moved up to net gains of fractions to 3 points during the first half of the session Friday, turned down to within a small distance of * the previous close and ruled steady to the finish. The list still was dominated by professionals, and a brief rally was insufficient to generate outside participation. Traders appear to ne holding aloof pending some definite word on the war debt problem. In Great Britain the impression is reported growing that America ■will not favor debt revision at this time. That brought selling into sterling and it broke to anew low for the year in London. In Naw York it recovered a cent and held the gain following a 3-cent break Thursday. Gains Lost at Close r Moderate week-end short covering was sufficient in the absence of liquidation to send the leading issues up easily during the early trading. At that time wheat was firm at fractional gains. Later wheat turned down and stocks sold off with it. Wheat closed at net losses of % cent to 74 cent and other grains made corresponding declines. Practically the entire list joined the early advance. At the highs United States Steel was at 36%, up 1 ’4. net; Allied Chemical, 79%, up 2Vi; American Can 55%’ up 1%; •American Telephone 109%, up 2%; Case 44%, up 2%; Union Pacific, T 2%, up 2%, and United Aircraft 28Vi, up 1%. Most of these gains were eliminated before the close. Gold Shares Strong Gold mining shares moved up simultaneously with publication of a Washington dispatch telling of a drive started by Congressman Rankin for a $2,000,000,000 currency inflation. Homestake Mining reached 1555, ex-dividend, up 2%; Mclntyre Porcupine made anew high for the year at 19%, up 1%, and active dealings at fractionally higher levels were noted in Alaska Juneau and Dome Mines. Pool operations went ahead in Montgomery Ward. The issue had a large turnover, even exceeding the active United Aircraft. One block of 9,000 shares changed hands at 14, up % point. The issue lost all the gain before the close.

WHEAT OPTIONS DIP SHARPLY IN CLOSING SALES Liquidation in December Position Weakens All Grains. BY HAROLD E. RAINVILLE United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, Nov. 19.—Heavy liquidation of December wheat drove that delivery to within % cent of the record all-time low on the Board of Trade near the close Friday. An early bulge on bullish Liverpool cable's was completely wiped out and prices were near the record low levels of Nov. 3. The December-May spread widened as traders changed their holdings to deferred positions. Com, oats, rye and barley sank rapidly with wheat, all suffering to some extent from liquidation of the cash month. Sentiment was very mixed and largely pessimistic. Close Is Lower At the close wheat was % to Ti cent lower; corn was % to cent lower; oats Vi cent lower; rye % to % cent lower, and barley Vi to % cent lower. Provisions were dull and easier. The exchange recovered from its early weakness and Liverpool lost its advance, closing unchanged on old and unchanged to % cent lower on new contracts. Argentine weather was more favorable, but there were some reports of a contemplated reduction in estimates on the crop. There was nothing of an inspiring character in the action of either stock or cotton early. Cash prices were % to 1 cent lower. Receipts were 6 cars. Cash Corn Lower Corn moved up fractionally early and while there was more selling of December and buying of May, at a difference of as much as 5Vi cents at one time, the market held around % to % cent higher at midsession. There was less -activity in cash circles, sales being about 45,000 bushels with 20,000 bushels booked. Cash prices were Vi to 1% cents lower. Receipts were 184 cars. Oats made a small recovery from the early dip and were around steady at mid-morning. Rye held % to % cent of its opening advance. The market was dull and featureless, however. Cash oats was Vi to % cent lower. Receipts were 9 cars. annoTncemehts 3 Funeral Directors, Florists Exceptional service always conducted with a fine regard for what is fitting andproper . . . this Johnson & Montgomery have provided and will continue to provide at minimum rates within the reach of all.
