Calm Romance Hectic Flower Showers at London’s Theaters Relegated to Past.

• fly United Preen LONDON, Nov. 18.—Disappearing are the lush, romantic moments in the London theater when page boys rushed down the aisles with bouquets and baskets of flowers for actresses at the end of the performance. The theater Don Juans still * send flowers to their favorite actresses, according to Picadilly florists, but most theatrical producers have laid down the rule that floral tokens of admiration must enter ' through the stage door rather than over the footlights. The reason for the new ban is that theater managers have for years realized that presentations of flowers across the footlights have made for jealousy among the company. Most Piccadilly florists, therefore, have been ordered to deliver , flowers to the dressing rooms in * the future. The mechanical age almost has seen the disappearance of the highly scarfed and toppered swains, who rapturously chose their flowers personally for their actress friends. Although the Piccadilly flower business is still very much of a booming industry, most orders are carried out over the telephone. Bootleggers Prepare for Rush LUNENBURG, N. ST. LAWRENCE CANAL DRAWING FIERCEATTACK Challenges to Waterway’s Economic Soundness Is Heard by Senators. By Brrippe-Uoicard Xctctpaper Alliance WASHINGTON, Nov. 18.—As yet, as pointed arguments have been presented to Senator William E. Borah’s special sub-committee against the waterpower development proposed in the St. Lawrence treaty. Opponents of the treaty have i centered their attack on the water - i way, and their challenges as to its i economic soundness have been abundant and powerful. In the course of the first five days of opposition testimony, a few witnesses, representatives of commercial and port organizations in eastern cities, have expressed, in general terms, skepticism as to whether the potential 1,100,000-horse power of electricity, can be marketed. But none of these witnesses qualified as an authority on power. This lack of testimony against the power aspects of the treaty Thursday prompted Senator Robert F. Wagner <Dem., N. Y.) to suggest that it might be a good move to consider the power and waterway features separately, and make each stand on its own merits. Wagner insisted that he made the suggestion on his own, and that he had not inquired of the views of President-Elect Franklin D. Roosevelt, who is known to be intensely interested in construction of Hydroelectric plants on the St. Lawrence, owned and operated by New York state. To separate the two features, it might be necessary to junk the pending treaty, and reopen negotiations with Canada. Frank P. Walsh, chairman of the New York state power authority, has indicated that he does not desire to appear as a witness until the subcommittee has canvassed all phases of the waterway dispute. Meanwhile, a formidable case has been made out against the shipway. Men engaged in transporting by water and rail, grain .and merchandise wirnin, into and out of the great lakes territory, have sought to prove with conclusiveness that, under present conditions, the canal can not accomplish any appreciable savings in freight costs—certainly not enough to pay construction costs.

DENIES ALL LOST IN WOODS GO IN CIRCLES Drake Professor Blindfolds Students to Make Tests. Bp United Pre DF.S MOINES, la.. Nov. 18.—Dr. E. G. Lockhart of Drake university has concluded that citizens lost in the woods do not always walk in a circle. He blindfolded forty of his psychology students, and had them try to walk down a line to a point 100 feet away. After each student had tried it 200 times, Dr. Lockhart decided : 1. About one-third do not have a tendency to walk in a circle. 2. The remaining two-thirds are evenly divided as to whether they make a right circle or a left circle. 3. Each subject is consistent. He always goes right, left, or zig-zag. Dr. Lockhart said he would experiment some more to learn why some people go one way and some another.

WORLEY PROBE AT BLANK WALL Grand Jury Nowhere Near Solution, Is Assertion. Marion county’s grand jury is no nearer solution of activities of Claude M. Worley, former police chief, than when it began an investigation nearly six months ago, it was learned today. Repeated rumors that Worley, who is serving a five-year sentence in the Leavenworth penitentiary, was ready to break his silence and “tell all” have not materialized. However, Prosecutor Herbert E. Wilson, who set out to learn where Worley got $91,368 in the period from 1927 to 1930, declared today the probe will continue. Worley

was police chief two years of this period. 0 A score of witnesses have appeared before the grand jury without giving any definite evidence as
