FARMERS MUST BE GIVEN AID, SAYS M'NUTT Pledges His Full Support at Opening of State Bureau Sessions. Governor-Elect Paul V. McNutt met the Hoosler farmer today, shook hands with him, thanked him for his aid in the election, and assured him that he would work 1 with every governmental means at hand to restore agriculture. 'Were going to show you something in this state that you haven’t seen for a long time—a Governor and a Lieutenant-Governor who will work together in harmony,” declared McNutt as he spoke to approximately 1,000 members of the Indiana Farm Bureau at the opening of their two-day business sessions in Claypool. "Prosperity can’t come back until the purchasing power of the farmer is restored, and it must be the business of the government to bring back that power,” he said. He praised his Lieutenant-Gov-ernor, M. Clifford Townsend, as "the man you members of the farm bureau gave to the state.” William H. Settle, president of the bureau, introduced the Governorelect with, "We didn’t elect you Governor because you were a Democrat. We elected you because we believed in you.” Settle preceded McNutt’s talk with an outline of the steps to be made by co-operative organizations to strengthen the federal marketing act through amendments and the need for an adjustment of values between commodities and money. The farm head asserted the belief that the importance of the gold standard was exaggerated. He declared the present effort to maintain an "honest dollar” was laudatory, but decried that a dollar that was worth $1.45 now, while commodity prices were at low ebb, was not an "honest dollar.” He paid the monetary exchange of the nation should undergo stabilization legislation that would make the dollar as stable as the bushel measure for wheat and other grains. The bureau is expected to urge the national administration to retain the federal marketing act but amend it to establish a price level for basic farm crops enough higher than the world price to create equitable ratio between farm and inti ustrial prices. The sessions close Wednesday with the major address by Senator Lynn J. Frazier of North Dakota.
