Jill 1 nilrd J'rrn* SACRAMENTO, Cal., Nov. 10.— Amnesty for 300 persons now serving prison sentences for violation of the state dry law was being considered by Governor James Rolph Jr. today. The Governor, who announcea before the election that he would vote for repeal of the law, and for enactment of a measure providing state regulation of liquor in the event of repeal of the eighteenth amendment, asked opinions from state constitutional authorities on his proposed amnesty act. The dry law, known as the Wright act, was overwhelmingly repealed at the polls. ASK PHONE RATE CUT Fifty Albany Citizen* Sign Petition Filed With Commission. Names of fifty citizens of Albany, Ind., appear on a petition filed today with the public service commission asking reductions in rates of the Indiana Bell Telephone Company. Appended to the petition is a note from Asa St. Clair, one of the signers in which he states “here are names of some of the patrons and if more are wanted, I can get them.” However, he states, “that unless something is done soon, there will not be many to get.” The petition asserts that it is impossible to pay prevailing rates under present economic conditions.

Music of Straus Is Fresh and Charming as Long Ago BY WALTER D. HICKMAN REPETITION of Straus’ “The Chocolate Soldier," seems to make the musical pudding only sweeter. That was my conviction after seeing Charles Purcell in the latest revival of this very tuneful and well known light opera. The thing that you are most interested in is this—How is the company? The production? The voices and the like? Charles Purcell has sung this role more than seven hundred times since going into the role when he was only 18. Purcell as usual gets so much natural comedy out of the role of the chocolate eating soldier that the part actually sounds like anew one.

Purcell refuses to grow old in the part or let the character age. He has the looks, the personality and the showmanship to make Bummerli a charming heartbreaker. He is splendid in the second act during “The Chocolate Soldier" duet with Nadina, played by Mary Akins and triumphs in the beautiful, “That Would Be Lovely,” duet in the same act. Once again, Purcell gets all the melody and the comedy possible in the third act while downing and singing “The Letter Song” with Miss Akins. Miss Akins does not overact or oversing. She gives a pleasant interpretation of Nadina. Os course her big number comes at the start of the show, “My Hero.” Her high notes were most effective. The three comedy parts are in the hands of veterans such as Edmond Mulcahy as the captain of the Bulgarian army. John Dunsmure as Colonel Popoff, and Sarah Edwards as wife of Colonel Popoff. Their work at all times is a delight. Lauretta Brislin and Tomes Chapman help the other principals in
