POLICE JOSTLE FIFTY JOBLESS AT STATEHOOSE Serious Clashes Averted and Group Leaves After Making Demands. Despite police warnings, “you can’t meet here," fifty unemployed met today on the east steps of the statehause, sent a committee of five to the office of Governor Harry G. Leslie and received a promise they will get a written reijiy to a set of demands. Some of those participating in the meeting were shoved by police who endeavored to form a line to march to Workers' Center, 932 South Meridian street. However, there were no serious clashes and the demonstrators soon were on their way to the Center. Allen Puckett was spokesman for the meeting and a committee headed by Frank Sigwart visited the Governor’s office where they were informed by L. O. Chasey, secretary, that Leslie was out of the city. He is said to be in West Lafayette, his home city, having made the trip to cast his vote in the election Tuesday. Demand Luesse Release Among demands was release of Theodore Luesse, Communist candidate for Governor, serving a term at the penal farm for interfering with an eviction. Appropriation of $25,000,000 for poor relief to be raised by taxing the rich; free lunches, milk, clothing and books for needy school children; full equality in dispensing relief and use of public buildings, including armories, to shelter the needy, were other demands. It was charged that quality of food being given in poor relief is bad, and it was demanded that each unemployed fierson be given $9.60 a week in lieu of baskets of food. Girl's Death Mentioned Death recently of Helen May Oliver, 12, with an intimation that she was refused medical aid at city hospital, was mentioned. Her family Is receiving poor relief. When Swigart and his committee reported that Leslie was not in, there was a shout of “He’s never in.” Chasey promised the committee the Governor, on his return, would write a reply to the demands and explain methods of administering relief. By Scripps-Howard A’et espnper Allianct WASHINGTON, Nov. 7.—The department of justice, which in 1928 found it necessary to deputize extra marshals in eight states to supervise the elections, anitcipates a peaceful day when the nation goes to the polls Tuesday. No applications have been received from district marshals for permission to increase their forces to prevent possible violence or election frauds. Precautions taken in 1928 included sending an assistant attorney-gen-eral to Indiana, where fraud had been charged, and addition of deputies in other states, including several in the south.
