‘GOOD TIME' IS CHIEF WORRY j OFJEEN AGE .Most Adolescents Not Interested In Parents’ Idea ’ of Problems. 9& Science Service WASHINGTON - , Oct. 28.—The Chief problem worrying most adolescents is how to have a good time. Boys and girls of the teen age are not interested ip wnat their and teachers consider the big problems of adolescence, Prolessor Maurice A. Bigelow, director of the school of practical arts, Columbia university, told members of the American Social Hygiene Association today. Long study of high school and college students has convinced Professor Bigelow that adolescence is not a great cataclysm nor a revolutionary period. He said that 985 out of every 1,000 boys and girls grow into, through and out of this period as naturally as they breathe. The so-called high school problem which worry parents and teachers, such as too much introspection and day-dreaming, may be* found beginning as early as the eighth or ninth year. Only Three Big Problems The only uniform characteristic of adolescence is the natural awakening of the sex instinct, and of social interests. Three big problems which Professor Bigelow found most adolescents concerned over are how to enjoy tnemseives, now to get enough money for necessities and luxuries, and how to get ahead in their study or work. Most boys between 15 and 19 think of what they are going to do when they grow up, what trade or profession they will follow. Also, nearly all of them occasionally think of the time when they will be grown up and have a wife and children. “Unemployment has laid a heavy hand on boy life,” Alda Bowler of the United States children’s bureau reported at the conference. Boy Life Hit Hard Many thousands of boys are now roaming the country, following seasonal opportunities for employment. These boys are not restless runaways, they are boys .from good, established families that have been hard hit by the economic depression. Out of 1,956 boys questioned at the East St. Louis Salvation Army station during June and July of this year, 1,866 said they had spen f the previous night in a box car. These boys are not toughened
