DIGEST'S POLL VOTE-SWITCHING FLOOD DENIED Brokerage House Issued False Statement, Says Editor of Magazine. f>U Timm Hprokll NEW YORK, Oct. 28.—The Literary Digest complained to the Stock Exchange Thursday that a brokerage house had issued a false statement as to alleged letters asking that votes be changed in the Digest presidential poll. At the ’same time, according to Editor William Seaver Woods, Republican headquarters in Chicago, was asked concerning reports that it had supplied the basis for a broadcast of a similar seport by a news broadcaster of Washington, D. C. According to a statement Woods issued, the brokerage -house—name not given—sent advices Oct. 15 to branch houses that the Literary Digest was being swamped with 35,000 letters to poll voters asking their votes be transferred from Roosevelt to President Herbert Hoover. The company later issued a notice denying the report and saying it regretted not consulting the Digest before issuing the market letter. Subsequently, according to the statement the news broadcaster disseminated a similar report, which was traced to "a national party headquarters.” Supplementing the statement, Woods told the United Press Thursday that Ray Benjamin of the Republican committee headquarters in Chicago had supplied the information to the broadcaster. Upon questioning as to the source of his data, he said, according to Wood;-:, that a Digest employe in Chicago had supplied it. An advertising solicitor, Woods said, is the Digest's only Chicago representative and he claimed this man knew nothing of the matter.

BY HERBERT MOORE I’nitfd Pres* Staff Correspondent LONDON, Oct. 28 —The house of commons, the prinme minister’s residence and the home of Montague Norman, governor of the Bank of England, were under strong guard today after hunger marchers who rioted in Hyde Park on Wednesday had threatened renewed sabotage. Guards at Buckingham palace, residence of the king, also were on the alert. Extra police were sent to Montague Norman’s home after a telephone threat had been received in which the caller said “we are sending unemployed to wreck the house.” The streets of London were heavily patrolled, and in many sections the constables walked their beats by twos instead of singly.
