JMerry Widow’ Remains a Theatrical Delight Hobart Bosworth Brings Back Thoughts of Days When the Movies Were So Young and So Silent. BY WALTER D. HICKMAN THERE are so many memories surrounding * The Merry Widow” to those who have experienced it before that a revival is just the recreation of a beautiful and a melodious stage institution. The thing that you are interested in Just now is: How is the cast? That is safe as long as Ronald Brian is Prince Danilo and Max Hirschfleld is the conductor of the orchestra. The fact is that this company is strong on singing voices, because the score must have it to be satisfactory. From a scenic standpoint it does not compare in grandeur to the productions of Henry B. Savage or some other revivals I have seen. But this fact is apparent from a scenic Standpoint—it is done in nice but conservative taste.
Having seen ‘‘The Merry Widow” so many times, I am convinced that the cast (the singers to principals and background) is the essential thing. Donald Brian brings his many years of stage experience and
his familiarity of the role to splendid use. Not getting personal—the fact is he has kept his voice as well as his appearance in marvelous condition. In his light comedy moments he is splendid. He knows his stage. In voice, Brian once more can create that haunting charm which made him famous years ago in the role. Even when

Donald Brian
he is stepping off the famous waltz number with Sonia (Virgihia O'Brien) we catch again the charm of that very ancient waltz. Neither Brian or Miss O'Brien have added anything to this number. It remains unchanged, and that is as it should be. Only this method could get the waltz what it should be. I must give Brian credit for that because “The Merry Widow” this time was staged under his direction. Miss O’Brien has made the widow very modern in dress and she handles her numbers with distinct charm and understanding. As to costumes—pleasing and adequate. Ruth Altman is magnificent as to voice, especially in “A Dutiful Wife" and the famous duet with Camille (Allen Rogers, also right), in the second act. Dominating the comedy scenes are Detmar Poppen as Baron Popoff and Nat Burns as Mr. Nische. Here is comedy relief that brings new life blood to this elderly musical comedy. Right casting in these two roles, no doubt about it. The remainder of the cast and the chorus, if that is the right word, fit into the picture. And do not forget what Max Hirschfeld accomplishes in the orchestra pit as conductor. Here is a sensible buy in a revival of "The Merry Widow” because the principals are right and I might also say the box office is right as to price. At English's all week. HOBART BOSWORTH TALKS OF EARLY MOVIE DAYS. It is interesting to note the honest ovation that Hobart Bosworth

is receiving at the Lyric this week when he walks out on the stage. Some men like Bosworth are interesting for what they stand for in movie land. Bosworth’s “act”
this season is not vaudeville in char ac t er. He walks out in a business suite and the applause starts. He begins to talk of his movie career which began in Los Angeles in 1909. He told about being at the • top of the heap on Broadway in 1902 and how consumption in hand with poverty drove him to
a shack in Arizonia, where he regained his health. As he (alks in this informal way, slides are throw’n on the screen which not only traces Bosworth’s worthwhile career on the silent screen when movies were in the infant class and dubbed ‘‘silly business,” but it is nearly the history of the industry. Bosworth is human and intelligent in his remarks. He has removed all the biAk and lot of his information will stick to your “mental ribs.” The offering of Pat Daly is eccentric burlesque. It is harmless fun and there are some laughs. Daly is doing the old gag, the restraint pills stunt, and many laughs are found in this old one. Naomi Ray has a funny burlesque on a Pavlova dance. Her assistant is Eddie Harrison and he is a corking good foil for Miss Ray, who has loads of personality. Lane and Harper have a clever way of staging a baseball game on the stage. Jack and Jerry have a dance offering in which some toe work stands out. The Young King Troupe excells in having boys who twist themselves in all kinds of shapes. The movie is Richard Dix in “Hells Highway.” Now at the Lyric. Other theaters today offer: “The Big Broadcast” at the Circle; “One Way Passage” at the Indiana; “Six Hours to Live” at the Apollo; “Rain” at the Palace, and, movies and stage show at the Fountain Square.
