Contract Bridge
This i* the first of a serte* of article* bv William E McXenney explaining the one over one bidding system for contract bridge This *vt*m it now employed by practically all experts, and it has won over 90 per cent of the national contract championship trophies in the last three years. BY W. F.. M’KENNEY' Secretary American Bridre League CONTRACT bridge, without a doubt, is America's greatest pastime today, and well it should be. What other game so holds the interest of the players and affords the clean hours of recreation offered by contract bridge? For the last few years, during the Introduction of contract bridge to this country, we,all have been bewildered by contract bidding systems. More than two years ago the writer presented, through his daily bridge article, the one-over-one sysctem of contract bidding. Since its introduction, many different bidding systems have been offered to the public and there has been a great deal of discussion regarding standardization of contract bidding. It is impossible for two or three experts to get together, write vp a system and correctly declare it as a standardized system. The practices and bidding conventions that produce winning results naturally will become the standardized system. nun PRACTICALLY every major contract championship in the last three years has been won by players using the one over one system of bidding. It is only natural that any intelligent bridge player should want to apply his own theories to a bidding system. To become a successful card player, your bids must employ natural card inferences, so that your partner can make the correct deductions. The writer, in this and his following articles, will present to you in brief form the one over one system of contract bidding as it is played by the majority of the country’s experts today. n n THE first and most important thing that must be learned is the table of high card tricks. It is quite simple, and eliminates many
of the honor combinations used in other systems. While honor combinations add color to your hand, they should not be figured in first valuing a hand from a quick trick standpoint. The table of quick tricks is listed below. Ace-King of same suit, 2 quick tricks. Ace-Queen of same suit, V/* quick tricks. Ace. 1 quick trick. King-Queen of same suit, 1 quick trick. King, 4 quick trick. Queen-Jack of same suit, 4 quick trick. Only one queen-jack must be counted as one-half trick for a suit bid. Quick tricks are defensive tricks. Your first bid not only should indicate to partner that you have a playable suit, but also should show him that, if opponents bid, he can depend upon you to take two to three tricks against any bid they may make. Quick tricks are the real basis for valuing hands at contract bridge. Your hand may contain six or seven probable tricks, but if you have unprotected suits and missing quick tricks, until partner shows up with those quick tricks, it is easy to understand that the opponents will run these off before you can get started with your probable tricks. iConvrieht.. 1932. track. It evidently had been used Thursday. Police believed Jerfita was another casualty in the strife for beer, gambling and vice privileges, intensified by the depression. TbSay's other victim was a welldressed man of apparent Italian descent. He was found dying in a new automobile of inexpensive make in a northwest side alley. He had been shot with a pistol in the left eye and the left side of the head. Thursday a tamale vendor was slain in typical gang fashion in Niles center. Three were slain Wednesday, one a young driver for a west side gang, another a beer runner, and the third a recluse believed to have operated an alcohol “recooking” still. A scientist suggests that folk tales of fairies may be traced back to real people—some pgymy race such as those now living in Africa.
