CTAND at a busy corner any evening and you will see long lines of autos, their drivers so eager to be on their way that they lose patience over the slightest traffic delay. Where are they going? What’s the hurry? They are going home. They want to get there NOW. HOME, a mansion on a hill, or a cottage in a valley, is the great American institution which gives assurance that, set-backs notwithstanding, this nation will survive to climb to higher and higher planes. For in our castle, tiny though it may be, our purpose is strengthened, our character is builded. Here, we dream our dreams, and from here we go forth into the world to make those dreams come true. It is here that we bring Mary, the bride of our choice. Perhaps money is scarce, at first, but we are young, and to the young life is a poem set to music which sings in the heart. U U U A YEAR has passed since Mary and John stood at the altar. John has been watching the wisps of blue smoke curling above the embers in the fireplace of their little nest. Finally he glances at Mary. For a moment he is speechless with surprise. He stares wide-eyed at the tiny garment which is taking shape under the magic touch of her nimble fingers. “MARY!” “Yes, John!” She smiles at him. She is amused at the frightened expression on his face. Funny how men always get scared at a time like that! “When, Mary?” “In time to be your Christmas present, I hope.” And thus they approach the first important milestone on the long road which winds and winds its devious course through pleasant pastures, likewise into valleys where the shadows sometimes are deep and the going hard. U U , U JOHN sees the baby boy for the first time as its rests in the hollow of Mary’s arm as she lies there so still, so white. Terror creeps into his heart. “WHAT IF SHE SHOULD DIE!” As yet the tiny mite beside here has not become a reality to him. In another week, after he has

emerged from his daze, he will begin to think secretly, as his mind leaps the gap of the years, about which college he should send it to, and whether it should he schooled in statesmanship. But now his thoughts are only of his wife:— “WHAT IF SHE SHOULD DIE!” But she doesn’t die. The baby thrives. John asks all manner of questions about it and especially is he interested in how rapidly it will develop. “When will it begin to look like—well, something?” “JOHN!” says Mary, shocked. “Well, you know, it IS kind of red, and it seems to me that it isn’t old enough to have so many wrinkles. Its head! You think its head is all right? I mean there isn’t anything wrong with it—mentally ? “Stop that, John! How dare you? “But when will it begin to talk? And walk? What! Can’t even crawl for months ?” It just seems that he can’t w T ait that long. . M OUT time is fleet. The weeks and the months speed. And the years—two of them. Will the doctor never come? They sit at the bedside, John and Mary. The face of their boy is flushed with fever. His arms are never quiet. His head rolls from side to side, back and forth, back and forth, as he mumbles. His voice is but the shadow of a sound. Mary puts her ear close to listen. “What is he saying, Mary?” “He is calling Daddy.” “Do you think, Mary that he will ” “I don’t know, John. I don’t know.” Tears roll down the woman’s cheeks. John pats her hand, in approval. “That’s good,” he says. “I wish that I could cry. It seems like a giant has my heart in his great hand and is squeezing it.” The doctor comes at last. “Serious,” he says. lie writes a prescription and John speeds through the night to have it filled. The medicine administered, husband and wife sit in silence—and wait, as stricken wives and husbands have waited through their agony hours in all the ages that have been, when lives of loved ones have hung by a web as fine as web was ever spun.

The light of the morning finds them there, and the noon and the evening and another night. The doctor comes again—and again—and again. "I can’t tell yet,” he says, in answer to their . questions. Another jporning! The child; opens its eyes and smiles—a feeble, wan smile, b\it there is recognition iji it. Maybe the doctor has won, or maybe whatever gods there be look down upon us sometimes and are touched by the terror which creeps into our souls. Who knows? We only know that the lad lives long to bless the home of Mary and John. * nun "VX/’E have said that purpose is strengthened and character is builded in the home. IT IS. For it is in the home that Life pours us into its crucible—the good of us and the bad of us—and tests us in its fire. At last Life skims off the dross of us and leaves us better than we were. Take the home out of the scheme of things and this nation and all of the nations of the world would collapse. The home is something more than just a house. It is the place where children are bom; where baby feet are taught to take the first step; where baby lips are taught to lisp the first word; where baby fingers become entwined in our heartstrings. It is here that girlhood becomes womanhood and is taught to set the example of virtue in a world that is none too virtuous. It is here that boyhood ripens into manhood and is given the groundwork of the yearning desire to go forth and be Somebody. W e think much on this subject as we scan this page of this newspaper, day by day, and appreciate the importance of men and women establishing themselves, not merely in houses—but in homes—in homes that they own, if it may be. At least in homes in which good influence prevails. W e should like to feel that this newspaper is a factor in establishing a degree of contentment among those who are discontented; a degree of stability among those who are uncertain and who shrink from the responsibility of good citizenship. Ow T n a honsie, if you can. If you can’t, find among these columns a house, and bring to it the dignity, the wholesome atmosphere, that belongs to the one word to which the minds of men and women ever turn when their feet tread strange paths. That one word is HOME.
