METHUSELAH, THE OLD BUMP ON A LOG
“ A NO all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years; and then he died.” And that, ladies and gentlemen, is all that you will find in holy writ about Methuselah, except the bare announcement that he was begotten. Just think of that! Here was a man who was on earth nearly a thousand years and in all that time he did nothing fco earn more than a four-word obituary:—“And then he died.” It is not of record that he did one tljing to gain for himself the respect of a man, the admiration of a woman, the love of a child, the fidelity of a dog. No deed of sacrifice. No act of charity. He just up and died. He saw fair-haired girls and roistering boys grow to womanhood and to manhood. He saw the years touch them in their passing until they became wrinkled and stooped; until death placed its icy hand upon them and said:—“Come.” Likewise he saw their children and their children’s children, and the children's children of their children’s children join the great caravan which ever marches on arid on into the unknown. If he eve.r so much as gave a cup of cold water to a wayfarer the historian has failed to ~ record the fact. He was just a bond slave of time, a parasite uj)on the body politic, a barnacle on the ship of progress.

Maybe you wonder why someone didn’t hit him with an ax and send him on his way long before death overtook him naturally. We’ll tell you why: * —There were no axes in those days. VX/'HO wants to be a Methuselah? ’ ’ Who wants to just sit around like a bump on a log, or a wart on a toad, or a freckle on a redhaired boy? If you want to, Mister, go ahead and do it, but get off to yourself and don’t block the traffic for folks who are going places. Get your petrified Carcass and your ossified brain off the public highways. Honk, honk! The green light has flashed and we are just about to step on it in this here town. # Yes, sir! Wall Street cleaned some of us like a Saturday night bath, but it was a surface cleansing and didn’t get to our inners, thank goodness. We still have our gumption left and our hope and our burning desire to do things. And there is only one way of doing things, and that is just do them. All right, then:— XJrERE on this page you will find listed for sale a lot on which a house could be built with profit. Somebody ought to build it. You will find, too, a lot offered for sale on w r hich there already is a house. Somebody ought to buy it.

While it is true that some of us are broke, many of us still have money. We recognize the fact that there are bargains on this page. We promise ourselves that, one of these days, we are going to do some buying. But prices are going up. Our dollar is worth more today than it is likely to be worth for a number of years. Let’s put our money to work, cautiously, wisely, but let’s put it to work. We are not urging people to gamble with the real estate market. We are urging them to check, up carefully on values, know that what is offered them is the right piece of property, in the right location, at the right price. Scan the ads here. Digest them. And then dig down in the old sock for the necessary money before the moths get to it. Let's don’t be Methuselahs. Let’s do something that will warrant historians of another age in writing something more laudatory about us than was written about that old fossil who lived nine hundred sixty and nine years: “And then he died.” Oh, lets begin to do things.
