‘SPECULATOR’ IS VAN NUYS FARM BOARD LABEL Activities of U. S. Agency Called Extravagant by Candidate. H't 7 inir* S/ttrinl CRAWFORDSVILLE. Ind.. Sept. 30—Activities of the federal farm board were condemned as extravagant by Frederick Van Nuys, Democratic nominee for United States senator at a Montgomery county rally here Thursday night. "The disastrous venture of the farm board has made the government a speculator in farm products." charged Van Nuys. ' The farm board has failed in its efforts to stabilize the price of wheat and cotton. “It first advised the producers t>f there commodities to hold their products off the market for higher prices. This failed. Gestures Are Futile "It then went into the market and purchased great quantities of both at par and above prevailing prices. This failed. “Sp. in order to recoup its losses, it has become a speculator in farm products.” Van Nuys said that as a final effort th# farm board advised cutting down the acreage, “which, quite naturally, proved *o be a mere idle and futile gesture. "And President. Hoover's experiment in agriculture has proved costly to the nation. O-dly to Nation "At the time of the recent congressional investigation of its activities it was shown that ihe farm board has purchased $23,000,000 bushels of wheat at a cost of $270,000.000, and cotton in the sum of $130,000,000. "From such purchases it, has suffered a loss of $177,000,000 and warehousing costs have mounted as high as $175,000 a day. And during ihe expenditure of these vast amounts prices have declined. "So have the Republicans redeemed their platform pledge to agriculture.”
