SERUM RUSHED BY AIRSHIP TD SENATOR'S WIFE Mrs. Borah Dangerously 111 From Attack of Dread Parrot Fever. By United Press CHICAGO Sept. 23. —An airmail plane winged speedily across the nation today bearing a precious supply of serum to combat the dread disease of parrot fever which has stricken Mrs. William E. Boran, wife of the senator, at her Boise (Idaho) home. * The serum, hastily made up by the United States public health service at Washington, is due to reach Boise at 2:35 a. m. Saturday. The serum shipment was manufactured late Thursday by government scientists after receipt of a telegram from Mrs. Borah’s physician that he had diagnosed her illness as psittacosis—the dangerous malady which humans contract from parrots and which appeared in epidemic form on the Atlantic seaboard in 1930. The airmail plane bearing the serum passed through Chicago shortly after midnight and was due to arrive at Salt Lake City late today. Instructions for treatment of Mrs. Borah were telegraphed her physician by the Washington scientists, many of whom contracted the disease in their efforts to fight the 1930 plague. Dr. Charles Armstrong of the health service gave his blood to form the base of the serum. He was afflicted with the fever during his experiments in studying the disease, but recovered after physicians had despaired of saving his life. Fights Illness Sturdily By I nited Pres s BOISE, Ida., Sept. 23.—Mrs. William E. Borah, wife of Idaho's senior senator, today was sturdily ana apparently successfully fighting the deadly parrot fever which she contracted from a sick parakeet. "Mrs. Borah's condition still is serious,” her physician, Dr. Ralph Falk, said today. ‘ But she has shown such marked improvement that I anticipate we may not be compelled to use the serum being sent here via airmail plane from Washington, D. C.” FOUR PERSONS HURT !N AUTO ACCIDENTS Cuts and Bruises Extent in Minor Crashes. Four persons incurred slight injuries in traffic accidents Thursday night. Gandhi Tells Aims of His \Fast to Death 9
The Mahatma Gandhi, undergoing a "fast to the death" in India, gave the United Presa a message to the people of the United States' today, appealing for moral support of his cause. The message follows: BY M. K. GANDHI (Copyright. 1932. by United Press) POONA, India, Sept. 23—Americans should know that my politics are derived from my religion. If God has ordained, death by starvation sets the last seal on my political leadership. I am convinced that real selfgovernment has been advanced by penance. If God gives me strength to see my fast through, the advancement still will be greater. Removal of “untouchability” is an integral part of home rule. I reject rule that denies health-giving balm to the meanest and most sinful Indian. If America understands the inwardness of sacrifice, I expect her to mobilize world opinion in favor
CAMERDNRAPS AUTOJEIZURE Holds Loan Firm Agent to Grand Jury. Repossessing automobiles without taking legal action was condemnea Thursday by Municipal Judge Clifton R. Cameron when he held L. V. Thompson, 140 South Senate avenue, loan company representative, to the grand jury on a charge of burglary. Bond of SSOO was provided. Mrs. Jennie G. Bales, 941 North Sherman drive, who was in possession of a car on which she owed a balance, charged Thompson came to her home while she was at a grocery, broke the lock on a garage door and took possession of the car, which was towed away. Thompson sought to show that Mrs. Bales’ husband unlocked the garage for him and that he gave a receipt for the car. However, both Bales and his daughter, Miss Marie Bales, denied this, and said that a receipt was found on the garage floor. 'This case ought to be investigated by the grand jury for the good of the community,” Cameron asserted.
