WATSON BIDS FOR DRY VOTES; 'BACKS' BONUS “Always for Prohibition— Politically, ’ Says Senator at Muncie. By Timrt Special MUNCIE, Ind., Sept. 23.—Republican managers today were reviewing with satisfaction effects of the address made here Thursday night by Senator James E. Watson, administration leader and candidate for re-election, in which he flirted with the idea of paying the soldiers’ bonus, and bid for dry support. Although Watson made no absolute committment, Muncie veterans believe that his statement of “When the time comes, you soldier boys will get your money ” indicates that he will vote for the measure if up in the next congress. This belief was further strengthened by the prefacing statements of “I voted for the bonus over the veto of .two Presidents, but as we couldn’t pay the bonus when it came up in the last congress, because we didn’t have the money, I voted against it.” Always Dry—Politically He pointed out that President I Hoover is definitely against the ! bonus, and then asked: “But where j does Roosevelt stand?” Someone in the audience shouted: “What about the eighteenth amendment?” “I intend to be fair with you,” replied Watson. I have been dry all my life—politically.” Recounting his votes for dry enforcement legislation, Watson repeated almost word for word the statement of President Hoover, that “in this hour we must preserve the gains we have made.”# Stresses G. O. P. Plank “The dry legislation which we passed is violated almost universally, yet it has rid the nation of that curse, the open saloon,” ha said. Relating that the Democratic platform calls for absolute repeal of the eighteenth amendment while the Republican plank calls for modification of the Constitutions, Watson said: “While I am dry, I believe in

that part of the platform which gives the people the right to decide whether they desire to modify the eighteenth amendment. “We intend that we shall retain the gains that have been made and that we shall not return to the open saloon. If there is a change, something must be submitted for the eighteenth amendment. The saloon has been destroyed and we intend to prevent its return.” GARNER ‘SURE’ OF AL Smith “Certain” to Support Roosevelt, Texan Asserts. By United Pres* ST. DESCENDS 2,200 FEET INTO SEA IN STEEL BALL Ocean Explorer Amazed by Sight of Strange Fish Far Under Ocean. By United Press NEW YORK, Sept. 23 —William Beebe, explorer, today held anew record for subsea descent, 2.200 feet, almost half a mile, as well as a weird picture of unknown fish with headlights. The explorer made his venture into uncharted ocean depths in the “bathysphere,” an airtight ball, with the inventor, Otis Barton, on Thursday, off Bermuda. A word picture of the feat with Beebe describing what he saw, was broadcast. Peering through a tiny window in the “Bathysphere,”* Beebe reported it “dark as Hades” at one instant, then “very brilliant” the next. Iridescence of passing tropical fish provided lignt t>y which he could study rare marine specimens. Some of these even had double lights, resembling the headlights of an approaching motor car. Fish swarmed about the iron ball, Beebe said, ‘I never have seen anything like them before.” Scientists hoped to classify them from pictures Beebe snapped. At the greatest depth the total pressure on the ::Bathysphere” was 4,800 tons. Temperature ranged around 50 degrees, Beebe reported. The expedition was conducted under auspices of the New York Zoological Society.
