Comes Clean Forgery Denial Changed to Confession by Evan-gelist-Salesman.
TOO much conscience —and possibly fear of to much evidence—today resulted In Herbert L. Adams, 1324 North Illinois street, evangelist-potato chip salesman, facing federal grand jury investigation. Before Howard S. Young. United States commissioner, the evangelist Thursday denied charges of Postal Inspector A. C. Garrigus that he forged signature of Mrs. Martha Cheetham, his former houseekeper, to a $5 money order. Impressed by Adams’ story, Young decided to continue the hearing until later, in order to question Mrs. Cheatham. When the hearing was about to be resumed. Adams gulped, furtively wiped a"way a few tears, and addressed Young. “Your honor,’’ he said. “I guess I had better tell the truth. I did it.” He was placed under SI,OOO bond pending grand jury investigation.

into communal groups is sweeping the Soviet Union. The Moscow press reflects a small fraction of the new campaign of revolutionary terror. And study of provincial newspapers reveals thousands of arrests never recorded in; the central press organs. Whatever the political justifications for the arrests, death sentences. and heavy prison terms, the immediate effect )s a tense atmosphere reminiscent of the most difficult days of the Soviet regime. Most arrests are made under decrees aimed do protect “socialized property,” and collectivized c^ops. A more recent decree is directed against thousands of so-called “speculators,” or middlemen who buy up farm products apd manu-1 factured articles for sale in the private market.
