NEW DEAL, LESS STATE EXPENSE, M'NUTT PLED6E ‘Both Barrels’ Given G. 0. P. by Van Nuys in Rally at Greencastle. By Timi * Bpertal GREENCASTLE, Sept. 21.—“ Both barrels" were given the Republican national and state administrations at the tri-county rally in Hoosier Highlands park here today by Frederick Van Nuys, Democratic senatorial nominee, and Paul V. McNutt, Governor nominee. Several thousand heard the records flayed at the rally held under the auspices of the Putnam, Owen and Clay county organizations. , “Anew deal in Indiana together with strict economy in government and equitable distribution of the tax burden if elected Goverfior,” were promised by McNutt. VanNuyi attacked the Republican agricultural marketing act which through its agent, the federal farm board, has faikd in attempts to stabilize the wheat and’cotton markets. Charges Leslie Failure "A Democratic general assembly never will make a budget and then fail to balance it,” asserted McNutt,. "Due to the failure of Governor Harry G. Leslie to assert leadership during the recent special session of the general assembly the state will find itself bankrupt next year, hat in hand, begging for loans to take care of state expenses. Revenues possible under the acts passed by the assembly will lack $5,500,000 of balancing the budget, which the same assembly approved. "The $1.50 tax law, which, by the way, is a plank of the Democratic state platform, will be given a fair trial. The Democratic party has pledged itself to the enactment of legislation to make it practicable. The law received the almost unanimous support of the Democratic members of the assembly. Killed Income Tax "After passing this law reducing the state's income by almost half, the Democratic members of the house passed income tax measures, which, it is estimated, would have raised $6,000,000 and would have balanced the budget, but the Republican senate killed the bill,” McNutt charged. "Republicans promised you lower taxes four years ago and lower expenditures in the state. In 1928, Indiana spent $46,828,980 in its government. During the last four years the figure has grown to $59,833,925. There is your promise—and there is the way they have kept it.” Van Nuys asserted that the declaration in the Republican platform that the party had redeemed its pledges to the American farmer is not sustained by fact. BETH-EL CLUB TO MEET 300 Members Expected to Attend First Session Tonight. The Beth-El Men's club will open its 1932-33 season tonight at the Beth-El Temple, Thirty-fourth and Ruckle streets, with more than 300 members expected to attend. Professor R. Clyde White, director of the bureau of social research at Indiana university, will speak on “Germany As I Saw It.” David Sablosky, president of the club, will assume office at the meeting, ffe succeeds Max M. Plesser. Hear Report on Mission ily I nili <t I‘rci m RICHMOND, Ind.. Sept. 21. The annual report of the American Friends board of missions, including both domestic and foreign work, was heard by the Indiana Yearly Meeting of Friends, in session here today.
