JAIL BILLIARD EX-CHAMPION IN SUPPORT CASE Five-Day Term for Contempt Must Be Served by Louis Spivey. Louis Spivey, Indiana billiard champion in 1930 and 1931, was "pocketed - ’ today by Superior Judge William A. Pickens, who sent him to Jail for five days on a contempt citation for failure to pay $277 support money for his child, Betty Lou, 7. Tearful pleas of his mother, Mrs. Helen D. Wieschan, New York, is believed to have saved Spivey from a longer term. Pickens declared he did not wish an impression to be created that orders of his court could be ignored. Spivey, a sign painter who has been making his home with his mother, was in court at the instigation of his divorced wife. Mrs. Thelma Spivey, 1833 Orleans street. At a previous court appearance, Spivey, who had SBOO insurance money as result of the death of his father, promised to pay support arrears, but failed to do so. The case will be disposed of finally, Tuesday. ‘NO PLACE LIKE HOME’ By United Press NOBLESVILLE, Ind., Sept. 9. DOLORES DEL RIO IS THE LATEST LUANA ‘Bird of Paradise/ in Movie Form, Opens a Week’s Engagement Today at Circle; Thurston at Indiana. “QIRD OF PARADISE,’’ which for so long reigned as one of the best on ■ the American stage, finally has reached the talking screen and today opens for a one-week's run at the Circle theater. Dolores Del Rio is seen in the exotic role of Luana, created on the stage by Lenore Ulric. Joel McCrea, who is familiar to the talkie fans, heads the supporting cast. Creighton Chaney, son of the late Lon, also makes his film debut in this production. Filmed in Hawaii, this latest RKO-Radio picture is filled with the sensuous beauty of the tropics, and has been given a lavish production by King Vidor, creator of such outstanding pictures as “The Big Parade,” "Street Scene,” and “The Champ.”
The story concerns the love of an American for a native girl whose love is forbidden to any one but a native prince. The native girl,! Luana, returns the American’s love and after several thrilling episodes, the pair escape the angry members of. her tribe. They remain hidden and blissful for weeks until an earthquake and an eruption of lava from Mt. Pele, interrupts their happiness. Luana thinks this disaster is the gods’ vengeance for her disobeying the tribal customs and realizing she would be a hindrance to the American among his kind, she sacrifices herself to the gods. An underwater fight with a shark, the flight of an entire village from the deadly lava of an erupting volcano, and a daring version of the hula are among the highlights in the picture.
