Democratic candidate for the presidency, hss declared himself in favor of a shorter working week as a means of relieving the unemployment situation. The New York Governor, in a telegram to the state federation of labor convention in Utica, declared that such a move would result in *room being made for at least 10 or 15 per cent more people in most 4f the plants which at present are if) operation." He said that the beneficial and wholesome effect of this method of relief would be very great. “I believe it is essential that definite steps be taken at once.” Th n Governors’ telegram was sent to John Sullivan, president of the state febjration.

Charges in the other rases were dismissed last week, freeing Voight's wife Frieda, and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Thompson of Speedway City. Voight maintains he fired in the belief he was obtaining revenge on two bandits who held up Mrs. Voight and Mrs. Thompson at the former's home. Earl Hiatt, identified by Mrs. Thompson as one of the bandits is confined to city hospital suffering from gunshot wounds he asserts were received in a hijacking battle near Springfield, 111.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind„ Aug. 26 Julia Jean Mace. 13. feared kidnaped from her home in Manhattan, Ind., was found here today. She told authorities she had gone on a hitch.hiking trip. It was reported that her parents were en route here to take her home. The girl told authorities that she hitch-hiked to Marshall, 111., stayed in a hotel there over night and returned to Terre Haute on a bus today. Authorities here apprehended her after Sheriff Turner of Clarke county, 111., notified them she was returning here. Officials said she had $4. Fear that the girl was kidnaped was expressed when she left home after writing a note that she was going to New York to accept a position as a model. ALLEGED SWINDLER TO BE TRIED NEXT MONTH Ohioan Returned Here to Face $50,000 Embezzlement Charge. Trial of Harry E. Hessler. 43, of 3514 Birchwood avenue, charged with embezzling nearly $50,000 belonging to Indianapolis business men, probably will be held in criminal court next month. Prosecutor Herbert E. was called the ‘‘Herrin Massacre" about ten years ago. It was acquired over a period of years beginning shortly after the Civil war when the “Bloody Vendetta,” a feud between two families, descendants of Kentuckians and Tennesseeans, who pioneered this county resulted in a number of killings. Following the “Bloody Vendetta" came race riots at Carterville when several persons were killed. In 1922 twenty men were slain in a labor war. Next was the era of S. Glenn Young, who reigned during a KuKlux Klan warfare and in an effort to enforce prohibition. He finally was shot to death. After that came the outlaw era when the notorious Birger and Shelton gangs terrorized southern Illinois. That era ended with the exe-
