WALZER United Tress Financial Editor NEW YORK, Aug. 26.—The majority of stocks opened with losses of fractions to more than a point today in moderately active turnover. Leaders rallied from the lows in the early trading. Steel common opened at 44%, off %, and then rallied fractionally. New York Central was at 26 off 1 1 *; Western Union 39, off 1%, and Union Pacific 78'a, off I'*. Fractional losses were noted in almost all the copper shares, a sizeable list of utilities and mercantile issues. Auburn Auto, exceptional to the trend at the outset, advanced 1% points to 67%. General Motors and Chrysler made small gains. Selling was heavy in the New York traction issues on reports Interborough Rapid Transit faced the possibility of receivership. The latter broke to 2%, off 2 points net. The weekly federal reserve statement contained several favorable items, notably a drop of $31,000,000 in money in circulation and a rise of $18,000,000 in monetary gold. Bradstreet's weekly review today found slight gains in retail trade and greater interest shown for goods at wholesale. Dun's review also found improvement, adding “the betterment now has assumed a nation-wide trend, with no particular area predominating in the revival except that a few districts in thd east are lagging somewhat behind the general quickened stride.’’ The General Motors first half report issued today showed a sharp reduction in inventories; cash and marketable securities on hand of $215,897,767; and a net working capital of $239,632,638. Earnings published a short time ago fqf. the first half amounted to only 24 cents a common share, against $1.83 in the first half of *931.

GRAIN FUTURES SELL DOWN IN SLOW SESSION Easiness in Securities and Cotton Factors in Slump. ' BY HAROLD E. RAINVILLE I’nited Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO. Aug. 26.—Lacking *he snap of recent sessions, wheat slid down around a cent on the Board of Trade today, but recovered most of the loss near the close when commission houses absorbed the surplus in the pit on the break. Easiness in stocks and cotton were factors, but most trades were watching Washington closely, expecting important business news to eminate from President Hoover's conference. Corn showed resistance and held around steady most of the day, keeping oats and rye near the previous close. Close Is Lowest At the close wheat was to 3 * cent lower, corn was % cent lower to % cent higher, oats unchanged to % cent lower and rye % cent higher. Provisions were easy with stocks and grains. Liverpool turned somewhat irregular and finished unchanged to % cent lower. Trading was exceedingly quiet early with no desire for aggressive action shown pending the movement of the spring wheat in Canada and the American northwest. Cash prices were unchanged. Receipts were 17 cars. Corn Tone Firm Corn maintained a fair degree of strength despite the easing in wheat standing unchanged to % cent higher at mid-session. The large receipts were not depressing as they were mostly on contracts made previously. New crop reports are favorable. Cash prices were 14 cent lower. Receipts were 364 cars. Oats did not get far from the previous close, holding unchanged to Vs cent lower early in sympathy with corn. Rye showed some firmness and was unchanged to *4 cent higher at mid-morning. Cash oats was unchanged. Receipts were 51 cars.
