HOOVER PLANS CONFERENCE ON FIVE-DAY PLAN National Parley of Labor and Industry Sought to Provide Jobs. B‘l I inirrl l‘re WASHINGTON, Aug. 2—President Hooker soon will call a national conference of industry and labor to promte more general adoption of th- five-day week, as a means of giving jobs to many nowidle. He accepted the suggestion for a general conference made by Governor John G. Wmant of New Hampshire, sponsor of the “New Hampshire” plan designed to create jobs for 3.000,000 through the fiveday week. Following up a conference Monday night with Winant and other representatives of the New England council. President Hoover will discuss the problem with other groups as a basis for the broad and detailed study to be made by the general conference he will call later.

“Deep Interest” Is Shown Commerce Secretary Lamont and Secretary Doak will make a careful analysis of the New Hamqg shire and numerous other plans sered the administration. President Hoover, Winant said, evinced "deep interest” in the plan whirh New England industry generally approved at a recent conference. Mr. Hoover did not commit himself to this particular solution of the ba ic problem which the United States faces in its millions who want work, but can't get it. The President recently included a shorter work week as part of his nine-point program for economic recovery. Doak said he has found a “growing sentiment” in industry for the five-day week. Predicts Spread of Plan “There is very good prospects of the five-day week principle spreading widely in the near future,” he said. The New Hampshire plan would require co-operation and sacrifice or the part of those now employed. They would go on a five-day week and contribute a large part of their smh days pay to a fund from which other works would be hired. Contributions also would be required from dividends. The New Hampshire plan works out on a proportionate basis. Its aim is a 10 per cent increase in employment. ROPE. AUTO END LIFE Man Steps Into Car With Noose Around Neck and Dies. Harrold tied one end of the rope to a beam in his garage, the other about his neck, stepped into his automobile and drove away. His neck was broken. Illness and unemployment was blamed.

Farmers and vegetables growers of Maricn county will suffer thousands of dollars’ loss this year bv ravages of the blister beetle—oldfashioned potato bug—according to County Agent H. E. Abbott. SENATE PASSES BILL CHANGING SCHOOL BOARD State Education Committee Rapped for Elementary Education Methods. Blame for “inability of elementary school children to think" was laid at the door of the state board of education today by Senator Alonzo H. Lindley (Rep.) Kingman. Lindley's accusations against Hoosier elementary school efficiency was made in argument in support of his measure to change the state board makeup, passed by a 35 to 9 vote. Under provisions of the bill the board would be reduced from eleven to four members and the state superintendent of public instruction.
