STATE MUTUAL UNION PUSHES THREE PROBES loss Caused by Chimney Spark, Lightning and Arson Investigated. Plans approved by the United States department of agriculture snd by the federal bureau of standards to further the use of metal icrecning on chimneys and roofs as a means to reduce losses by fire were adopted during the midsummer meeting in the Insurance building. 2105 North Meridian street, according to the report today by H. L. Nowlin of Indianapolis, secretary of the Mutual Hail Insurance Company of this city, who was secretary of the meeting. The conference, which was attended by forty representatives of as many companies also discussed a proposal to codify Indiana laws pertaining to farm mutual insurance companies, of which it was said there wpre eight, none of which repealed the others. Delegates to the meeting also considered a proposal to confer with the state concerning its procedure in relation to losses caused by the killing of livestock by lightning, and to investigate, too, losses caused by arson. Losses caused by sparks on roofs, especially of farm buildings in Indiana and reluctance or inability of the owners of such structures to keep them in repair, coupled with use of cheap coal, have caused a condition, it was said, which will be met by the proposed expenditure of SIOO,OOO within the next two years to further use of metal screening. William F. Clark of Ft. Wayne, president of the Allen County Farmers’ Mutual Insurance Association, was chairman of the meeting. Mutual insurance companies of Indianapolis and Marion county which are members of the union include the American Mutual Insurance Company, of which Sollis Runnels is president and J. P. Cook, secretary; Farmers’ Mutual Insurance Association of West Newton, Edwin S. Mills, president, and Elmer J. Barnett, secretary; Fidelity Mu•tual Fire Insurance Company and the Indiana Lumbermen's Mutual Insurance Company, of which F. B. Fowler is president and C. Disher, secretary; Grain Dealers’ National Mutual Fire Insurance Company, of which J. J. Fitzgerald is secretary; Indiana Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, I. B. Mumford, secretary; Indiana Union Mutual Insurance Company, Harry P. Cooper, secretary, and the Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Indianapolis, Otto Wagner, president, and Mrs. Charlotte D. Riess, secretary.

Life insurance is truly an organization of public service which places within reach the means of avoiding distress. Organized charity is grounded on the same principle. The failure oi the man or woman to take out life insurance in one form or another is the cause of much charity work. When a man dies a certain amount of wealth-providing power is destroyed. Apparent or other person, or a family, or a community is deprived of the amount of wealth he formerly contributed. The loss was irreparable until the invention of the device of life insurance, which now replaces at once the man’s value as an Income-earner and so prolongs his life's usefulness and continues his income to his dependents. There is another evil w'hich almost rivals death—an old age which is either indigent or dependent. The protection of life insurance has been extended until it now removes this danger too; an inrome Is assured.
