! DAPHNE POLLARD TO TOP NEW LYRIC BILL English Comedy Actress Got Her Start on the Stage When She Fell Out of Her Cradle Many Years Ago. r T~'HE Lyric program for one week starting Saturday is expected to A prove one of the really outstanding stage and screen shows of the | summer season. Daphne Pollard, mad-cap comedienne of the movies, heads the stage bill, including six acts of RKO vaudeville. Warner Brothers new season Vitaphone picture, “The Purchase Price, ’ brings together Barbara Stanwyck and George Brent in leading | roles. A ‘ Who s Who” sketch of Daphne Pollard, the vivacious comedy star of screen, musical revue and vaudeville, is difficult to crowd within the
| confines of one of those ordinary length “boiled down” histories. The little international celebrity started life early and since then | has gone places and done things to a degree all out of proportion to her tiny self. Daphne must have lit right on a stage the first time she fell out of a cradle. An Australian legend relates that she was the baby star of a juvenile opera company known as The Pollards, in her native city of Melbourne, when only 6 years old. This British folklore can not be doubted because some time prior to her seventh birthday celebration it appears in the history of the American stage that her overseas triumph was duplicated right here. For several years thereafter up and down the Pacific coast, in literally a score of musical comedies, she reigned a tremendous favorite. It was in this propitious atmosphere that her talents really de- ! veloped. By the time she reached I her early teens she was thoroughly | established and a consummate actress, skilled in every usage of dramatic expression and besides that possessed of rare singing ability and a great dancer as well. The schooling of the west coast inevitably graduated her to Broadway and in her first appearance there with the late Eddie Foy she was an overnight hit on the great white way. Vaudeville and musical comedies then followed each other in rapid succession, leading to one of the big mile-posts of her career, a starring engagement at the head of one of the pretentious “Passing Shows” at the New York Winter Garden. Her greatest triumph up to that time came the opening night. Even England heard of it and A GOOD BUSINESS SCHOOL Strong business. stenoKrHphlc. secretarial and accounting courses: individual instruction in major subjects, large faculty ot specialists in their respective lines. before the season ended, she was engaged by Albert de Courville—the Ziegfeld of London—to star in a mammoth revue at the Hippodrome. Another quick conquest and on to Paris. Her season there as a comedy star of an important musical extravaganza at the Follies Bergere was probably the most successful in her life. America reclaimed Miss Pollard when a hurry call was sent out for a first ranking stellar comedienne to head the imposing cast of the last “Greenwich Village Follies” production at the Winter Garden. Indianapolis theaters today offer Frank Libuse at the Lyric, “Make Me a Star” at the Circle, “Winner Take All” at the Apollo, “Washington Masquerade” at the Palace and “Lady and Gent” at the Indiana.

SMALL POWERS IRKED DY ARMS PARLEY RESULT Feel They Were Ignored in Private Conversations; Charge Railroading. . By United Pre GENEVA, July 21.—Smaller powers at the world disarmament conference were infuriated today by alleged attempts to “railroad” the resolution adjourning the meeting “which did not reduce anything.” They threatened to delay the adjournment scheduled for this week. The United States accepted the resolution as “the first real step toward realistic disarmament.” The smaller delegates complained that they had been ignored during the private conversations among Americans, British, French and Italian delegations.
