TAKE STEP TO KILL HOUSE'S UTILITY BILLS Fight to Open Door to Public Ownership Seems Doomed. Low? and bitter fight of more than one hundred municipalities to open the door to public ownership of basic utilities and to free plants, already so operated, from domination of the public service commission, seemed doomed to failure today. Meeting behind closed doors, all but one member of the cities and low'ns committee have determined to recommend to the house of representatives that the utility bills be killed by indefinite postponement. The excuse to be offered for sounding the death knell of the measures sponsored by the Municipal Rights League of Indiana, is that “this is a special session called for tax relief and there is not sufficient time to consider bills providing for public ownership or removing municipally owned utilities from control of the public service commission.” The committee, one member of •which, John F. Cory (Dem.), Gary, :s an Insull employe, decided to take this step late Tuesday after several members had been converted to the privately-owned utility point of view that tax relief through public ownership of utilities should not come within the province of the special session. A minority report recommending passage of the two bills will be presented by Jesse P. Curry (Dem), Vevay, who is a sponsor of the public ownership enabling act. Martin Kreuger (Dem.), Michigan
