HERE IS THE FINEST FILM DEATH SCENE Watch Wynne Gibson Do Her ‘Mother’ Stuff Against a Hard Egg by the Name of George Bancroft. BY WALTER D. HICKMAN THE greatest death scenes on the legitimate stage were contributed by Sarah Bernhardt when she was living. The greatest death scene to date on the talking screen is contributed by Lione; Barrymore in “Washington Masquerade.” In my own little way, I had the right many years ago in The Times to tell you about this Barrymore in a play called "The Claw" This same play land I have yelled from the housetops why this play should not be on the screen) is now on the screen in American form.
When it started on the stage, Barrymore w'as of the French Deputies. In "Washington Mas-
querade,” he is a United States Senator from the “sticks,” who gains power in the senate and then goes wrong. I ask you to watch Barrymore when he tells the “campaign boss ’ to go to a happy hunting ground. Meaning even hotter weather than we have here. Watch his hands. Watch his walk into the
t s- mjj&r
Barrymore
reception of the “boss.” Then watch the “blow off” when he tells the boss that he is not going to run for the judgeship, but is going to run for the senate. I ask you to watch the cleverness of the director when Barrymore gives his “oration” against the power trust in the senate. Also watch Barrymore. Theatrical? Yes. All the time, please notice the background (scenery), which gives you a picture of a White House reception. (.The Hoover idea is comedy to me because only the back of the President is shown.) Watch the other interiors. Please watch Barrymore when Consuella (Karen Morley) gets her cheap, scheming fingers on his sex life and his honor. Then watch the crash. Please watch the scene where Diane Sinclair (she plays the role of Ruth Keane, daughter of Jeff Keane, the Barrymore role) tells her father and her mother-in-law just what is what. Also watch Barrymore. Then watch all the time the mental, physical and sex weakening of Barrymore. This is tremendous. Then watch the “senator” during investigation and in And then the death scene. Oh, how very tremendous this is. Just a simple death in a chair. No movement. Just exhausted death. This is great acting. To me this is the greatest death scene I have encountered on the talking screen. On the stage, the death scene was worked differently, with the mob breaking in the windows (French) after the disgrace. Here is movie drama as it should be. Please do not miss the greatest dramatic acting that the talking screen has given us. Now at the Palace. a a a WELL. WELL, WELL AND A FEW MORE WELLS Well, and a few more of them. By one stroke of human acting, Wynne Gibson as Puff Rogers in “Lady and Gent” goes in my Hall of Fame. And I have put very few new ones in that hall lately. “Puff” is just
a female guy, the companion of a “cheap” and slow thinking and talking fighter. He is slow but honest when it comes to love, fighting and eating. For all that is right, please notice, Miss Gibson when she starts h o u s e k e eping Watch the director when he changes one quarrel into the answer of that quarrel. Here is

grand human comedy. I hope you agree with me—Miss Gibson walks away with this picture because she has a real story and a real director as well as a real human actor— George Bancroft in the star role. This Gibson woman startles me the more that I think of her work in this picture. Who has kept her down? We should have a lot more
of her fine work if the stories and directors can be obtained. (Don't be silly. They can.) Here I am yelling from the housetops about Wynne Gibson when Bancroft is the “star” of the picture and the box office draw. Bancroft deserves that rating because he is so humanly g_and, honest and “dumb” in his characterization. You will love him when he tries to give a talk when his “son” wins an honor button in school. Am awfully sorry that I missed the beginning of this picture. Had wrong information on the time of the starting of the feature. Going to recommend this one. Meaning Wynne Gibson in “Lady and Gent.” Now at the Indiana. a a a HERE IS HOLLYWOOD AND SOME MORE OF SAME Don’t take this idea too seriously —Here is more Hollywood and some more Hollywood. Am speaking of “Make Me a Star” and Stuart Erwin gets down on his knees in his nightgown to ask that blessing. You have heard of “Merton of the Movies.’i Well that is about what
goes on in “Make Me a Star.” Here is a male-Polly-anna from the sticks who goes to Hollywood after his grocery store boss thinks he is "nuts” taking a correspondence course in movie acting by mail. This is not all together a “sap” picture because of the very human acting of Stuart Erwin and Joan
Stuart Erwin
Blondell as the girl who was always in the show business and always will be. Joan is the good fairy to Erwin because she gives him a square meal when he was trying to feed on the left overs from the lunch boxes on the movie lot. And this is sweet Polyanna stuff. Even Henry Behrens and myself got wet around the eyes during this human scene. And being a regulation Polyanna movie our hero in Hollywood suffers and suffers, but the right gal is always just around the corner. Here is more than comfortable entertainment,. It is human and sweet. It always has been a grand formula and it still works. Mighty sweet entertainment is this one. Now at the Circle. a> a a CONCERNING “WINNER TAKE ALL’” In my opinion James Cagney is at that stage of his development that William Haines (the wisecracker) once found himself. From an acting standpoint in “Winner Take All," James Cagney is
careless. Mighty careless, just like William Haines used to be. Here is another prize fighter story and it is not so forty as brought to the screen. Ca g ney certainly is playing this prizefighting role with a dash of violet here and there. Must blame the play wright for that. I guess. Cagney is a prizefighter who goes
