BY W. E. M’KENNEY Secretary American Bridge League TkyCANY bridge players are possessed with the idea that the only chances for good play come when you are the declarer, but a championship player is usually gauged by how well he can play the defense. There is no question that it is a little more difficult to play the defensive hands than the offensive, but very often an opportunity arises to make a nice play by simply keeping your wits about you.

j of hearts and his side was not vulnerable. This South quickly doubled. The Play The king of hearts was the opening lead by South, which was trumped in dummy. A small diamond was next led and won by declarer with the king. Declarer then led the seven of clubs, South went right up with the ace and then returned the eight of spades in order to stop declarer from ruffing in dummy. The trick was won with the jack. Declarer’s next play was the king of clubs from dummy upon which he discarded a diamond. He then led she ace of diamonds and a small diamond, ruffing in his own hand with a small spade. Declarer's next play was a small heart which was ruffed in dummy with the six of spades. A diamond was returned, North discarding , other heart and the declarer trumping with the ten of spades. This left the declared with the ace and queen of spades and two hearts. South has the king and one spade and the ace and queen of hearts. The declarer led the seven of hearts, which was won by South with the queen, North playing his last heart—the jack. South then led his ace of hearts, and while it is quite unusual to trump your partner’s ace, that is exactly What North must do. He should trump the ace of hearts with the nine of spades in order to be able to lead through the declarer rather than allow his partner to lead up to the declarer. When North leads the queen of clubs, East will trump with the queen of spades, but South will be; able to overtrump with the king of j spades and thereby defeat the contract one trick. If North had failed to trump his partner’s ace. the declarer’s contract of four odd would have been made. (Cooyright. 1932. NEA Service. lac.) i

ZOO KEEPER 1$ KILLEDJY GNU ‘Friendship’ With Animals Proves Fatal. I By Unit'd Press DETROIT. July 16.—Personal prowess, and a friendship carefully cultivated with “his animate,” caused the death today of Gus Mott, 58-year-old farmer, recently turned keeper of the African veldt, at the Detroit zoological park. Mott died of wounds suffered late Friday when he was gored and trampled by an 800-pound gnu, largest specie of the African antelope, and commonly known as j “horned horse.” ! Only quick action by Jack Downey of Brooklyn, N. Y., who was visiting the park with a sister, saved the keeper from instant death. Mott unarmed, first entered the inclosure of an ostrich, which had been placed apart like the gnu, because of unusual viciousness. Then he walked into the gnu’s pen. Paradoxically the gnu had been nicknamed “Gus” by other keepers because Mott had made it a special “pet” after the animal had killed a mate and two calves, and been confined, therefore, in a separate inclosure. Downey heard a scream and running to the sunken "?n found the keeper being gored and trampled. With rocks and an iron bar, he managed to attract attention of the gnu, and fought with it through bars until three other keepers rescued Mott. POPULAR GIRLS VIE FORJONORS Hawthorne Prize Decision to End Celebration. Final night of the three-day celebration at Hawthorne park tonight will determine the winner of the girls’ popularity contest, in which Miss Isabelle Dodge holds a slight lead over Miss Helen Greely. Other contestants are Miss Mary Frances Douglas and Miss Janet Nogle. Nine-months-old Dolores Britton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Britton, 46 South Belle Vieu place, received a diamond-set locket Friday night as winner in'the baby popularity contest. Harold Simer, 7% months old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Simer, 222 South Addison street, won second. SUSPECT CHARGES HE WAS BEATEN BY COP Officer Takes Stand to Deny He Treated Man Brutally. Charges of Frank Richter, 919 Broadway, that he was treated brutally by Detective Lawrence McCarty were denied by the officer Friday from the witness stand in criminal court, where Richter is on trial charged with second degree burglary and grand larceny. Richter is accused of stealing SIBO from an A. & P. grocery, where he was employed. Following his arrest May 19, Richter says he was taken to police headquarters, where he alleges an open hand blow by McCarty while being questioned in a small room caused him to fall from a chair, his head striking a radiator. He charges he was not given treatment for the resulting wound. According to the defendant, the blow was delivered after he told the officer that sll6 deposited in a bank three days after the store burglary was money Richter and his wife had saved. “Anything I hate is a damned liar,” Richter says McCarty yelled.
