Helene Wallenda and Circus Clown
Pit tty little Helene Wa Honda twice daily akes her life in her hands when perched on the shoulders of her brothers, “three high.” as they walk across a slender strand of wire forty-five feet above the hippodrome track and arena of the Ringling Bros, and Barnum & Bailey circus. But in her leisure moments—those moments when the circus world is at rest between shows— Miss Wallenda loves to visit the clowns. And she never fails to get
SERGEANT SWIMS, BUT IT’S FOR DUTY
Doffs Uniform and Yanks Six Youths From Proscribed Pit. Devotion to duty proved pleasant for Sergeant Timothy McMahon of the accident prevention bureau Wednesday when, in the course of following orders, he enjoyed a swim in a gravel pit southwest of youths violating the edict against swimming in unguarded places. On the day that set anew heat, mark, McMahon was fortunate to encounter a situation which necessitacd that he. too. enter the water —in the performance of duty, of course. “Come and GrH Us” McMahon reported that the six youths refused to heed his order to leave the gravel pit. Displaying the oft-regretted modren disregard of law and order, the boys retreated to an island in the pit and hurled the outlaw’s defiance, “Come and git us!” McMahon, displaying the undaunted rashness of his Irish ancestry, calmly retired $o his police car. where, perhaps in anticipation of such a regrettable situation, he had bathing trunlft. Donning them, and leaving his badge and gun behind. he gave no thought to the 6-to-l odds against him, and braved the depths of the eighty-foot pit. Brings Back Clothes Whether the barricaded culprits were quite cowed by McMahons reckless disregard of his person, or whether the w’ater cooled McMahon's ire, is not known but when he reached the boys no resistance was encountered. Garbed in the majesty of the law and bath>nt trunks. McMahon eathered the boys' clothing and. holding them abeve the water, floated back to shore. Reaching the shore, th? boys were released with a stern warning against the dangers of entering the cold water of gravel pits on exceedingly hot days—and who should know better than McMahon? Theta he “coolly" went his way. i
