CHARGE CROOKS 'COLLECT FOR’ BONUS TROOPS Thousands of Citizens Duped by Racketeers, Assert Army’s Leaders. By T'nitrd Prm* WASHINGTON, July 12. The bonus expeditionary force today began a campaign against imposters, who, it is alleged, have converted to their own use thousands of dollars collected in many cities for the veterans. There was a possibility that the department of justice might order a federal investigation. Agents of the bonus army have been sent to Chicago, New York, Atlantic City and Newark, N. J., to investigate disappearance of funds and food which never reaohed here, although ostensibly collected for the army. Roy W. Robertson of Los Angeles, leader of a recently arrived California contingent, planned to complain to justice department officials about a group which campaigned for funds in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Arizona. The group, including several women garbed as Red Cross nurses, sponsored tag days in several cities. Captain Eugene F. Everett, Union City (N. J.) bonus army finance officer, said he was "certain that thousands of dollars have been collected for the army which never have reached he national headquarters. • "Soliciting contributions for the bonus army ha|s become the most profitable national racket in the country,” he said. He said truckloajds of food collected in Newark nbver had gotten beyond Trenton. (|>ther truckloads failed to arrive frdm Chicago and New York, he declared. Only 1,100 members of the bonus army have applied for transportation home under the government’s offer which expires Thursday. Railroad tickets have been issued to 979 men and N money for gas and oil has been loaned to fifteen who departed by automobile. POSTAL AIDS ORDERED TO TAKE 'FURLOUGHS’ Each Employe to Take 10 Rays Off Without Getting Paid. Orders from the postal depart- j ment in Washington have been re- j ceived by Postmaster Leslie D. Clancy giving instruction on the manner in which postal employes will take arbitrary "furloughs” with- j out pay as part of the government economy program. Each employe in the Indianapolis office will be required to take a fiveday furlough in the month of July and as many days next month as necessary to reduce pay to the point determined by the ruling. Heads of various departments will ! not take furloughs, but are receiv- | ing direct salary cuts, Clancy said, j If necessary, furlough days will be j continued for several months, al- j > though no employes will be permit- I c ted to leave during the Christmas ; holidays. Other federal employes will take off two and a half days without pay each month to reduce their pay to the lowered rate. First inforced vacations will be taken this month.
